That’s what I said about Chrysler products when I wrenched in school in the ‘70s, but now I drive one.
In all fairness NOTHING was good in the 70s

The music was GREAT! :)
I was referring to the vehicles… after 72 maybe 73 the world ended as we know it. Now we have plastic hellcat red eye scat pack widebody srt chargers with 93 computers built in that anyone can finance for just 99 dollars down and a driver’s license that doesn’t even have to be valid.

I was responding to post #46 and hadn't even yet made it to #48. That being said, any time I have the opportunity to express my love for the '71 426 Hemi Cuda, I will. If I had Jeff Bezos money, it's one of the first things I would buy.

Exactly!

And even that aside... those huge open pit mines have got to be great for the environment and climate...
They’re good questions. Good to care about it.

Not an expert in mining of said materials. Can’t really comment. I notice the tech in the space is changing rapidly. Just this week I read of one player bringing a new lithium direct capture process to market.

Like I said, I know not a lot of this realm. As consumers we should care about those questions and they’re good questions.

Who controls the mining of battery ingredients?
Well I guess the hope is it’s US and Western countries taking the lead and controlling the tech and the supply chain.

That will be vital.

That far eastern super power I mentioned does not compete on fair terms. It’s their thing. They cheat and so on. Well known for it.

The thing is they can’t design and innovate like free capitalist economic systems can.

That’s our edge. And yeah the US particularly has done alot of the innovation and design leg work.

So like hell do you want to leave them to it now that they reverse engineered the stuff etc.

8 years 100k miles
And I believe they replace it if there’s like 10% loss in capacity or something.

That is an amazing warranty on a battery tbh. Hell of alot of value in a product like F150 Lightening.

See that’s what the copy cats and cheats will never do. Make beautiful big pickup in ev and treat the customer to a quality warranty coverage.

Cannot beat capitalism. Well hopefully not.

I used to live on a golf course. Lot’s of ICE mowers and blowers in operation all the time. My next door neighbor was a scratch golfer, riding in a gas powered golf cart, on a course maintained with all that ICE equipment. He was also a car guy with a fleet of old Jags, MGs, Austins. Granted, he didn’t drive those THAT much.

But he was also a PHD scientist for the EPA, as was his wife. He had authored papers on the cause and effect of particulate matter in the atmosphere. We were on friendly terms for the most part because we were next door neighbors, and we were both “car guys”.

But periodically he would get on a political rant about folks that didn’t see things his way. I’d ask him when he was going to get rid of those cars, and give up his golf club membership.

I asked him once, how is it that first it was global cooling, then it was global warming, now it’s climate change. I countered a few of his statements, and he would get mad and storm off (he was 80 and somewhat testy).

The climate has been changing for all of recorded history, long before humans generated the things we generate now. Whenever scientists can finally agree on what is actually happening, I might listen.
Definitely try to learn about what the climate of this planet was like over the geological time periods. That will explain alot.

A key aspect is; the rate of change.

Try to have faith. Remember that we bank on this stuff when we fly. When we book in for vital surgery. When we walk over a bridge. And even when we fire the ICE motor up.

It’s the same principles of science that we all rely on in every case. If you stop trusting your scientists, your engineers and your leaders in these fields then you stop leading the world.

The USA leads the world in this stuff. I’ve spent my life immersed in US engineering standards. They’re peerless.

I’m jiving on what your saying man, sure I could and would disagree on some points but I won’t because whether any of us want it or not and whether any of this EV business is successful or not the tech is still coming and here it’s not people or corporations it’s the government forcing via the “existential threat” clause. But…..I can’t jive in you know a lot about the tech when your not familiar with the process start to finish. The mining process to manufacture of batteries to end use waste disposal. Two of those I nothing about but one of them I do….a lot about it and would make everybody’s head spin the environmental impact. Not saying it would drift your opinion any, but at least understand it maybe

I think one of the problems is there seems to be an environment where you are told to just “trust the science”. Well that’s not the scientific method. You always question the science and if it’s good science then it will only strengthen statement / theory / hypothesis. Too many people treat “the science” like a religion that can never be questioned and if you do then you’re some sort of conspiracy nut or whatever. Kind of ends the discussion.

No hate here. Great choice. Lightening sounds/reads awesome.

Will be an interesting experience. I’d be interested to read how u get along with it relative to the ICE powered Glad.

If they sold an all EV Gladiator here, retained the front mounted inline driveline and solid axles, I’d do whatever it took to buy one.

I cannot wait for the day they do an all EV Gladiator. Decouple from the hydrocarbon supply chain for good.

I just need an EV that turns me on. And that could only be a Gladiator at this point bc it’s the only ICE platform that turns me on.

Goodluck w the Lightening.
Sir,
With all due respect---wanting an all EV in this day and age is probably about the worst thing you can hope for if you really care about the environment.

Americans love to think they are saving the environment by buying an EV---which is so untrue due to complete lack of thought and willful ignorance.

Most of the rare earth metals for the batteries and controllers are mined by huge diesels and in countries that pay nothing more than lip service to the environment as they generate huge amounts of environmental waste doing the mining.

Then you have to look at the MILLIONs of gallons of diesel fuel used to transport the raw materials on cargo ships to the country of manufacture and the tons of electricity to manufacture the EV. ONE container ship alone carries between 2.5 and 3.5 million gallons of fuel to run it's engines and burns tons of fuel each day. Then there are the large amounts of diesel to transport from the manufacturer to wherever the vehicles are sold.

Then of course is the charging of all the ev's which almost no country, to include Australia, has the energy grid for. While the grid is being built tons and tons of coal, natural gas, and fuel are used to run the grid. Our renewable energy has definitely increased to above 10% but has resulted in massive pushback now that the ecological costs of the "free" energy is coming out.

Here in the states the California "EcoWarriors" and other states have to deal with rolling blackouts. While Australia is a huge exporter of energy in the form of coal, natural gas and crude oil it is also a huge IMPORTER of refined fuels that can actually be used.

Then there is the weight addition of ev's on the roads---which aren't built for it thus necessitating in more repairs and or brand new roads that are built better. Guess what---more diesel use and air pollution doing the repairs and building new roads

I guess we don't even want to go into the range of the battery in extreme conditions and/or hard use. Not to mention the decreased ability of the battery every year and then the huge environmental waste when the battery is shot---or the large amount of environmental waste and energy required to dismantle and then rebuild the batteries.

Pushing the cart before the horse has resulted in BILLIONs of lost dollars for our vehicle manufacturers because EV's have proven to be unreliable in regard to range and the ability to get a charge. If you don't stay local so you can recharge at your own house each night then you definitely have lots of extra time as well as a huge pair of balls to commit to being on time. Having driven pretty much all over Australia throughout my years of being stationed there and visiting family I think you are one ballsy guy to go EV only.

Toyota has been much smarter by not jumping full tilt into the EV's and instead using hybrids which have been selling like hotcakes while large EV's such as the Lighting have cut prices and the manufacturer has HALVED the production.

Way too many studies have been done on how many YEARs it takes for the price difference of the EV to finally break even with the simple ICE guy paying for fuel.

As for me no way am I interested in hybrid as it too has the added complexity of two systems and approximately 10% of extra weight.

As for repair costs and length of time for the repair the EV has a pretty bad record compared to an ICE vehicle.

I may only get 15MPG with my Jeep Mojave but I'm generating micro amounts of pollutants and using way less amounts of the earth's resources than what goes into getting the EV materials, and transporting them. Manufacturing is equal or less energy and the transportation of the finished product is about the same or more energy [due to added weight]. But the added cost of the road and energy infrastructure compared to normal growth is all on the EV.

Hope you think about all this before actually buying an ev only vehicle.
