Alex is amazing to work with. I actually just sold my X4S yesterday for a Softopper after a year. It was a great looking cover and convenient if I had items that could actually fit under it. My issues were:

1. It leaked water quite a bit and it appears to be a design issue…I live in the PNW so this was a huge disappointment

2. When rolled up it took up enough room at the cab where on a number of hauls I was unable to shut the tailgate by a mere inches

3. I determined I really needed a Softopper instead so I could actually keep things dry in the winter time due to size of cargo and lack of water tightness. (Again…constantly wet over half the year)

4. I could tell how the end caps could be an issue. Mine started to get a bit wonky as well but no failure.

cheers
I live in the PNW. How do you like the softopper?

Softopper has been amazing…and dry! Absolute only criticism of it was installing it when it was 40* outside was a bitch. The canvas is tight when new and even after lowering the pivot point it took all I had to snap the final snap. Hoping once the weather warms up it will become easier.

Cheers

The double side tape on the front foam strip doesn't stick to the spray in bedliner. Other than that no issues so far and looks great installed.

Only challenge I see with X4s it looks like it only overlaps the bed rails by maybe a 1/2". And the extrusions seems delicate being so low-profile.. thus a shallower t-slot.

I want it, but nervous to run any rack with it. Especially because it looks as if it's hard attached to just the 4 points in the corners of the box. nothing down the rail..?

What are you planning on running? I used front runner crossbars with a roof top tent and it held up great during a trip to moab last EJS. I wouldn't consider attaching much more weight than that, though.

What does your tent weigh? I have debated getting a rack and mounting a spare to it if I go bigger than my current 37s.

Roughly 140lbs. I was fairly skeptical but it did well. It isn't permanently mounted though. When I'm not on a road trip I strip the bed to just the cover, it was one of the main reasons I went with the X4S. If you are going to mount a 38" or something larger permanently I would probably look into a more heavy duty rack that mounts to the bed and just find a cover you can trim or make work with it.

Yakima HD towers with some mods.. then 2 85lb each 12ft pedal kayaks for a cross country road trip.. if it will handle it..

Considering selling my diamondback and getting this.

Any flex issues with the rails not being attached to be bed in the middle?

Why would you do that? The diamondback looks rugged.

There’s no flex in the X4S because the sides lock in the top part to make them connect. It’s a great cover but after a year and eight months mine is cracking on top and the metal structure under the cover is coming apart. I contacted BAK a week ago but haven’t heard from them yet.
The diamondback is a pain for me to remove and reinstall when I want to use the whole bed.

Thanks for the info.
