I’m new to the Jeep world and very excited about our new Gladiator. We always upgrade our truck batteries to bigger marine batteries to be able to run a fridge on the main battery for a few days without starting the truck and still have plenty of power to start it when leaving. Really don’t run many other accessories during that time. Coming from the Toyota world we were always able to fit a group 31 Optima under the hood and it’s been more than sufficient. I’m not finding similar for the Jeep.

Are there some battery upgrade options that would allow this? I see there is a dual battery option for the truck but wondered if there was an option for a beefy battery in the factory location. Love to get some opinions and recommendations.

You are limited by the battery space and the length of the battery cables. If you have the Tow Package, it is supposed to come with the highest capacity available for that physical size.

Measure the space available (LxWxH) and then go through the Battery Group size chart. There may be something available, but watch for reversed terminals.

Well what ever battery you use, stock or if you find an upgrade, you can always add this to it. It's what I plan to do down the road with mine.

80 watt solar
I was looking at those! I have a Rubicon so mine would be smaller but I think I may end up purchasing.

Lithium. Be the best space vs capacity option and as a bonus 1/3 weight less.

And 10x the cost! Haha!

I've not seen any auto lithium's available, where would one even go to find one that would fit into the Jeep?

Third one on a google search "Lithium for Truck battery".

Ya $. Add in life time, add in cost of changing your current batter, a new mount, add in a dual battery group ya ya ya. It cut's into that actual costs.

I don't know a whole lot about batteries but that lithium only has up to 60 amp hours. An AGM for our trucks would have up to 90 amp hours and would be able to power things longer. Interesting.

AMG can be drawn to what, 50% safely? so usable you have 45.

Lithium can be drawn to 100% safely over and over, that's 60.

Most lithium per size have more than AMG or lead acid. I would bet if you look you'll find more amp hr per size in lith.

Lithium by far is the better battery, issue is cost. If you need amp hrs and are overlanding etc lithium is the way to go.

I know your not necessarily looking for a dual swap, but the Genesis kit is very good. It’s a little expensive because you have to buy the kit and two batteries, but you will kill two birds with one stone. You’ll be able to upgrade to a beefier battery and upgrade the POS aux battery used for the electronic start and stop (lots of threads on it). You’ll be able to run your frig and accessories off one battery and it won’t touch your cranking battery. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Interesting. Like I said, don't know much about batteries. Ha!

I've had 75 ah on a AGM before and it seemed to be sufficient to run the fridge for 2+ days so I may be good with 90 ah may be good.

I have actually considered the Genesis kit...and am still considering. For the cost of that full kit I could get a lithium though and not have to worry about all the extra stuff under the hood.

Also, this isn't necessarily the case with their kit but my Jeep shop (only do Jeeps) have seen issues with some dual battery systems on the JL/JT due to battery size and extra wiring.

We'll see.

For overlanders who truly get out there, I strongly recommend the dual-battery option. One single, large battery is still susceptible to the biggest problem with batteries for overlanding: Harsh vibration of washboard roads damaging the battery internally. Like what happened to my friend, Ray, when we were driving the Dalton Highway. He had top-of-the-line AGM batteries that were only a couple years old, but one still failed.

I could see that for sure. I by no means am an overlander nor claim to be anything remotely close. I run trails around the state and go on 1-3 night camp trips. I am certainly driving down some bumpy roads in my journeys but certainly nothing like what a full time overlander would.

I may end up going a big main battery and a Cascadia solar panel on the hood of the Jeep to keep it topped off. Not sure yet.
