I just got a quote (without parts) to install an ACT clutch assembly on my gladiator for $1670+incidentals.

That seems excessive. I asked them what their hourly rate is and they said because this is outside their area of expertise (they specialize in subarus and miatas) this job is done on a quote basis, not a rate and booktime basis. It's a very respected shop among subie people so even though i don't like the "quote basis" answer i'm still considering them for the work.

But that still leaves me with the question, what's booktime for this work anyway? I used to replace clutches myself, but if we're just being honest here: it's a job I haven't done in probably 16 or 17 years and never on a 4wd or AWD vehicle, so I'm wondering how my memories of doing RWD and FWD clutches rather quickly are clouding my judgement on how long a clutch replacement with a transfer case should take.

They gave you what I like to call an FU quote, meaning they probably have enough work as is on their regular clients, taking anything else outside of their expertise is a novelty price. I would suggest shopping around check reputable Jeep mechanics, heck even go to your local dealer. You will be shocked how much prices vary from place to place.

Curious to hear some data points on this as well.

Especially as I understand Act doesn't require hydraulics modification compared to Centerforce, depending on how much time that saves.

I paid $600 for labor for my Centerforce install. 6 hours. I separately had hydraulics install at it was 1-2 hours. So 8 hours max. Good luck!

Been quoted $830-1613 all around Ohio. That's me providing the parts.

Sounds like they aren’t interested. It’s pretty straight forward. We (ACT) have a detailed install video, and I can send you additional tips. It should be a 6 hour job according to All-data as I recall.

Try Globex in Tom’s River. They will be installing my Centerforce clutch when the time comes. Bringing in my Gladiator for a re gear in two weeks, got a great quote on that. These guys are real Jeepers & look forward to the work.
