Ha!!!!! When I put the River Raider on my LJ one of the mechanics I was discussing exhaust routing with asked me if I had one of these in the mail yet.

Does it spin at 70 mph?

yeah it does! takes a bit of engineering to make it last. my 1st one rattled like a mofo and flew to pieces after about a month. but after disassembling, greasing, and upgrading the bolt/washers it spins even in a stiff breeze and hangs on at interstate speeds.

If you could see it spinning, whilst driving, at 70 MPH, I am cerealously impressed!

Propellors work in air or water, I'm thinking an additional 10 MPG at highway speeds, around town, notsomuch.

Works on the same principle as those nifty experimental helicopters with the prop blade instead of a vertical out back, or so i've been told by the intertubes.

If not familiar, check out the Cheyenne. A buddy was a test pilot on the program. Still wonder why they passed on it.

IIRC it was the Cheyenne vs the Apache, right? Chances are the right palms didn't get greased appropriately

I think the Cheyenne was post Apache, I had the thought it was a Loach replacement considered

Had to look that one up.

Cheyenne was developed around the same time as the Cobra as a tank killer. Cobra was supposed to be an interim jungle fighter until Cheyenne could be fully developed. But the Cobra was less money, lower operating cost, less complicated and shared parts with the Hueys already in service plus there wasn't much VC armor in play in the jungles. A fatal crash in testing put the nail in the coffin as it were and the Army decided a 2-engine attack chopper was more survivable.

Apache came from the next program. The Army required twin engines, to be shared with the Blackhawk.
