Checkout this gear pattern, why am I getting howling under load around 45mph?

Okay I increased backlash to 9.5 mil and the noise is better but still there. I did not change pinion depth. Do I need to change pinion depth with backlash? I didn't have much time today to try things, so I didn't run a gear pattern.

I recently had a shop do gears for my JKU. I asked the owner what brand he was using, as I had read about issues with the yukons. He told me he would never use yukons again because the last several he installed all howled.

So if these howl with a good pattern/backlash...is there any issue just driving them as they are?

As long as the pattern is good and everything is in spec, sometimes aftermarket gears just talk to you. Not ever single gear set will be quiet, especially when you go above 4.56, the pinion just gets too small.

I wish a company would make a "Pinion Kit" for these diffs, Yukon use to make them for other axles, it was basically the bare minimum for a gear swap, included a few carrier shims, but had both pinion bearings, pinion seal, crush sleeve, and pinion shims. From what I've heard with these axles and that funky Pinion tail bearing, it's going to need replacing on the regular.

Interesting. I drove around for an hour or so this morning and find that it may get real intrusive on a family trip while towing a trailer. I'm going to drop it off at a local jeep shop on monday and see what's happening. I had my chance lol.

I agree with the going lower than 4:56 gears being noisy in D44 and smaller axles. My XJ D44 caused me quite some frustration and difficulty getting setup. The D30 high pinion not a problem. ? A knowledgeable friend of mine who advised me "that it's just that way" with some gear sets. Especially on D44 that was about 50-60 years old and worn tooling making them. After driving on I-State you could fry eggs on the center sections. BTW: "I may have used Yukon gears" in my XJ I don't remember.
The AdvanTEK 210, 220 axles are not that old. The problem is how small the pinion gear is on deep gearing 4:10 /4:56/ 5:13 vs 3:05/3:55/3:73. The gears will run a lot hotter especially when you are driving at 65 mph and faster. Another reason I use synthetic gear oil possibly better heat resistance (????) My choice would be Dana gears and not going beyond 4:88 gearing without getting bigger axles.

Had an excellent local shop redo the install. They've done hundreds of jeep regears.

They rebuilt the rear with new bearings but reused the yukon 4.88s.

Has the same noise. I don't know if I installed them wrong initially and caused them to break in weird or if they're defective. The shop advised to see how the noise changes over break in but likely the noise will not lead to unsafe conditions. I believe them, but I told them I will probably return and have them redo front and rear diffs with new gears anyways. I plan on driving this jeep on long trips and I don't want to hear that drone.

I can't say I recommend Yukon at this time. I was fairly confident in my install and it appears that having a pro do it has not taken care of anything.

Okay I put another ~600 miles on it and the noise has not changed. I think the gears are crap from the factory. I'm not too happy with yukon right now...

Due to quality control issues, I'd recommend having a professional do the install with parts they order so they have to stand behind it.
