I know this thread is old but figured I would throw.02 cents in. I bought my Willys Sport with trailer wiring but no hitch. The bumper indeed can be used as a Class II ball in bumper hitch. I wanted more. Apparently even installing the Mopar Class IV in place of bumper support tube only gets me the max capacity of 4500 lbs. without the Max Tow package’s HD brakes, upgraded cooling fan and upgraded alternator along with 4.10 gears instead of my 3.73
Will I ever tow over 4500? Maybe not, but I know my limitations won’t be the frame mounted receiver connection at least so I feel better spending the $250 on Class IV kit even if I use it as a Class III.
Hey usnavycdr. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Like you, I just bought a Willys with the Class II, and have an appt with UHaul to put in a receiver hitch. I didn't know whether that would increase my 3,500 lb towing capacity, and was looking high and low for that answer. Would that increase my towing capacity to 4,500 like yours?

Attached are the prints of the rear crossmember with and without the receiver. My Willys came without and I ordered a Curt Class III Hitch kit for $99 through eTrailer. The difference is that the Curt is bolted on (two up through the cross member fro the bottom and one down through the top) whereas the OEM has a single 4" weld across the face.. Is the weld superior? Probably. But I 'm not worried. In and of itself, the Curt is rated 5000 pounds. But the truck is restricted to 4500. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/Jeep/Gladiator/2021/CU74FR.html?VehicleID=20215001631

If UHAUL installs a Class III (5000lbs) 2" receiver and you have the automatic transmission (manual has less tow capacity) then 4500 on a Willy's Sport will be the max. That 1000lb difference may be useful someday. Class IV is overkill but Mopar available. I believe there is a Class III Mopar addon but not sure it hits 5000 lb capacity. Class III can be from 3500-8000 lb.

Thanks I hadn't looked at the specs on the bolt on Class III but 5000 should be more than the Jeep can tow without the Max Tow accessories. I'm sure it will be safe. The base frame mount is every bit as stout as the Class IV hitch only lacking the welds vs bolts.
