I’m taking the family to Sand Dunes National Park this weekend, main point is sand boarding and hopefully playing in the little creek if it hasn’t dried up yet. I would love to squeeze some wheeling in if possible. Any recommend a trail appropriate for a mostly stock Rubicon near Alamosa?

Medano Pass, just air down for the sand, and take the river crossings slow, a few sharp rocks in a couple of them. There's a few spots where the stream runs down the trail, can get muddy and slick.

I have a winch but my experience using it was always with other jeepers and not my wife in the vehicle no doubt rolling her eyes. The sand you speak of, chances a winch would be needed? 50/50 or less? Are there trees available for recovery or do I need one of those deadman sand recovery things?

thanks for the info

You'll see the sign for Medano Pass right past the large parking lot for the Sand Dunes.
There's plenty of trees past the sand. For the sand, as long as you're aired down and in 4x4, no worries. Where the stream flows down the trail, look at the tracks that are there. If it's muddy and tracks are all over the place, turn around, or you'll get stuck. I would look at picking up a tree saver strap if you do need to winch off a tree, just to protect the tree.

I’m sure we can find something fun.
The other trails right there are open and definitely moderate and challenging in spots, would still be a really fun trail ride.

My wife and I are going to be in your beautiful state in late July and early August with our new, stock Mojave. We're staying near Fairplay and are interested in heading over Mosquito Pass from Alma. I'm curious about any trail reports or other advice (or if anyone wants to join us). We've done Ophir pass coming up from the Telluride side in our old JK so any comparison between the two would be helpful.

We aren't really trying to prove anything or tear up the Jeep but hear the views and the mines are worth the trip - isn't this why we bought a Gladiator anyway?

Any other nearby moderate trail advice would be welcome as well, particularly to any alpine lakes or streams where we could fly fish. thanks...

I haven’t done mosquito yet, but live very close. If I’m around when you’re here, I’ll happily join you. There are a bunch of moderate trails in the general area as well. It’s a Jeepers candy store.

Awesome...Thanks, Dan! We've had a lot of fun in the area in our old JKU. Was sad to see it go but looking forward to new trails and adventures. If When we make it Leadville, I'll buy the first beer! ?

Drove that trail twice last year. We went from Leadville to Alma, then hit Georgia Pass over to Jefferson. Mosquito isn't difficult, a few small parts that you'll drag a skid plate on, but very similar to Ophir with sections of loose shale, but not as pretty as Ophir. Plenty trails to drive on the Alma/Breckenridge side. On the Leadville side, there's a plethora of lakes that one could possibly fish. Not a fisherman so not sure if they're actually good for fishing.

Great day out with @Summitdan and Randall in his TJ driving Bunce School Road and the Ironclads. Picked up way too much trash along the way. Dan has his rig built well. Many of the obstacles were easy for him.

Thanks for the intel @Mightytalldude. Had a good time on Medano. I don’t have nearly as much experience in sand as I do on rock so that was fun. Kids also love the creek and dunes.
