I think outside the box, so don't get offended here.
all good appreciate the humor

Divorce, and let her take custody.
interesting approach, but not feasible

Smaller camper, because she's gone now and the new girlfriend is a spinner.
camper is already small, would be a RTT in this case to tow a boat

Now, with those adjustments, you're ready for the best riding and best looking JT out there, the Mojave!
agree about the mojave, but limited roof-rack options

One of the boys rides up front with you. The spinner rides behind you in the back, because she's 5'1" and technically doesn't have legs.
[/QUOTE]

kids are 3 and 5, so still short :) Also being 6'6 and tiny women involves challenging physics

Hotels are great too.
they are, but the areas I like to fish at, have none close by. Fishing while being surrounded by 500 other people defeats the purpose of solitude

14 foot kayak? WTF?!
Get a bass boat.
working on it, but mostly use the 14ft kayak on the ocean (would love a 16 or 18ft kayak for this), bass-boat and oceans don't get along well

I'm glad you posted. There's a lot here that needs fixing.

yeah, but really really wanted to stay away from a full size truck, due to mpg's and size.
I went to my land up north in Wisconsin. 600 miles. got a 2022 mojave 3.6 with 35s and get 15 mpg. Also have a 19 ram 1500 with a 5.7 factory 20s and get 23mpg. Just because they are full size doesn’t mean bad mileage

I have a Diesel Rubicon and live near Sacramento. A few weeks ago I pulled a car hauler and Wrangler TJ to Reno and back with no problems going 65. The TJ is around 4000# and the trailer was a U-Haul car hauler, which supposedly weighs 2500#. There wasn’t much else in the bed of the truck and I was alone, but I was pleasantly surprised. I would do it again without hesitation and am considering taking the TJ to Moab on a lighter trailer in the future, which I didn’t expect to be an option with the Gladiator.

this sounds like there is literally no issue with towing up the mountains at max load with the Gladiator, especially since it's still kinda hot here.

thanks

Gladiator will not fit your needs. I have trouble pulling a 2k lbs trailer up the mountains. Kayak and rtt? You'll need to mount your kayak on the roof of the rtt. Some rtt have racks that can carry up to 150lb (unopen).
Ok what is different with your Gladiator than the other ones? Several posted having no issues with 6k lbs load of trailers, or cars, etc. And you struggle with 2k lbs. I feel there is some information missing.

I can’t speak fully to temperature concerns. It was about 85 at my house and in the 70’s at Truckee. As you know, it’s not uncommon for it to be 20 degrees warmer here in the summer. However, temperatures weren’t an issue at all on my trip, but who knows. 20 degrees can make a lot of difference.

Not sure who's pulling a 6000lb load up the mountains, but I'm definitely not one of them. On flat ground maybe. I'm also running the 3.6 model with a lift, on 37s and has a alucab canopy/rtt. Even in stock form, pulling 4k+ lb load up the mountains is going to tough.

OP, I think some people, myself included in my original post on page 1, are thinking of the gas engine towing despite you mentioning diesel in your post (sorry, I suck at reading).

The diesel is a completely different animal. I suggest you do a deep dive into the diesel section of this forum to learn more before buying one (especially a used one).

Just to add on, it really seems like you’re trying to make the wrong tool work here when there’s other tools that comfortably do the job (F-150, Ram 1500, etc). But hell, if you’re dead set on a diesel JT then don’t let anyone talk you out of it (except maybe your wife lol). They’re awesome vehicles so I don’t think you’ll have any regrets.

I also missed the part where he wanted a diesel. I have a diesel and I love it. I wouldn’t trade it for a 3.6 and probably wouldn’t have bought the JT without the diesel motor. It turns 40s with ease, is fun to drive and gets “good” mpg. But I would never consider buying a jt diesel if I was ever planning on using it to tow in any capacity. I already run hot oil temps up passes without towing or payload. It’s a great motor and platform but be prepared to spend some time and money figuring out how to keep it cool.

I towed my trailer quite a bit this summer. I have a new PCM coming in the mail that will be used to cure most of the ecodiesels problems. I’m 6’ 4”, it’s comfortable but I did the seat jackers because it seemed like I was sliding forward in the seat.

You know you want one, so just do it! I recommend adding the Gobi Stealth Rack for carrying gear on top. I use mine for water and winter sports equipment, surfboards, windsurfers, kayak, etc. Also recommend one of the models with the 4.10 gear ratio: Rubicon, Mojave, or Max Tow - not sure if other have the 4.10 gears, but these will do the job. Max Tow has the highest tow capacity, Rubicon next, then Mojave. Or go with the Diesel with the 3:73 gears because the diesel has power to spare for pulling. Gas models with 3:73 gears are not rated for towing 4k. Gas and Diesel versions are having their respective engine issues, recommend going with extended warranty for piece of mind and coverage. Many add larger tires which could affect towing capability so I'm sticking with the Stock 285's (33's) for my Mojave and its towed my 4k boat all around Puget Sound with no problems. I haven't pulled my boat over the passes yet, but I do 70 easy with a 2Klb camper. These come with 8 gear auto transmissions, use them all, that's what they are for! ?

That’s pretty impressive! I wouldn’t expect that mpg while towing? Do you know if that’s typical?
It seems that it is typical.

Yesterday I did a trip to a race track in Belgium with the same set up.

In total 225 miles, 99% highway, ACC on 65 miles/ hour, flat terrain and again 23 mpg.
