@sharpsicle I'm about to tackle the tailgate install for my dashcam rear camera using your great idea as inspiration. I'm curious if you made any further modifications for weatherproofing, as you mentioned you had some concerns about that initially.
I didn’t put the camera inside the handle, but did mount it to the handle and drilled a small hole for the wire. It’s worked very well for me.

I never got around to making the improvements, but the camera is still functioning perfectly well as it is!

Finally got around to installing the camera in the tailgate. Basically followed the same install path defined by @sharpsicle.

In the tailgate, I drilled a 3/4" hole for the camera but the camera barrel was 15/16", so I filed out the hole to about 1 1/8". This allowed me to insert the camera into a (stretched) 3/4" rubber grommet that fit the larger hole. This gives the camera additional stability and weatherproofing.
