I’m concerned the electronic gremlins are going to shut my truck down. If my theory is correct, this will be my first real problem with the eco diesel.

Roughly 200 miles ago my truck gave me a warning that it will not start in 500 miles unless I add DEF. A few days ago I filled it up with almost 5 gallons.

my gauge and the warning lights have not changed and I’ve gone through several start cycles. The gauge shows 1/4 tank of DEF and the warning on startup says 490 miles left before it won’t start.

Is there a way I can manually reset the computer? Thoughts?

If you haven't already, go take some bumps or speed bumps off kilt, get her shaking around. If it's a float maybe it's stuck.

Thanks. I thought the same thing And tried that and pumping the brakes. After a little more research it looks like the gauge sensor is not like a fuel tank. It has sensors in a few spots?

further research on older Jeep diesels suggest I need a reflash or a DEF tank replacement.

I hope not.

Wanted to add a note to this. This also happened to me. It happens with heavy def usage on mine after towing a trailer. Showed low won’t start in 750miles. Filled up as I was at the half way mark and it it didn’t go away. I was concerned with was my GDE tune as this was newly installed. Talked to GDE and was told that this is normal on this engine and that it happens after high def usage. That it would clear after driving normal for a while at Hwy speeds. Well mine cleared after doing exactly that. Just a wanted to share if it happened to anyone else.

My def tank is now doing the same thing. It was reading 500 miles till def empty and now it's down to 370 miles. I put a can of Def in which usually brings it over 3/4 full. Drove it for a day and it's still saying 370 miles. Filled the tank completely and it's still saying 370 miles. I'm assuming it's not a big concern since there's def and the gauge just isn't reading. Non the less a frustrating situation. Anyone else having these issues?

My rear parking brake cable was rubbing against the def tank wire harness. Luckily i found it before it rubbing through the wires.

Depending on the weather where you are, if it’s cold when you filled it and has stayed that way, the tank may be frozen and the plunger is stuck. That has been my experience her in CO recently with those bouts of cold we’ve had. I filled it at -stupid ass cold and it took two days before it registered.

This is very common and related to how the sensor works. It's essentially a sonar type sensor. So, when you really top it off, the sensor can be submerged or it's so full as to not pick up an accurate reading. After a few days you'll have used enough DEF and it will start picking up again and how "full". Annoying, but usually nothing to worry about. RAM 1500s with the Gen3 EcoDiesel also have the same behavior. Also, as mentioned, the freezing in cold weather is a very real thing and will also effect the readings until everything gets warmed up and it can get a good reading with all liquid in the tank. This is also a reason why you should never overfill your DEF tank, as the filler neck isn't heated and it will freeze, possibly damaging the DEF system. Basically, when it gets below 1/2 a tank... add a 2.5gal jug.

Mine has exhibited this every time I've added DEF.
