I've started using FVP brand. It's $10 for 2.5 gal. So far so good, and for some reason it seems to last longer than Blue DEF. But now the truck has officially become a fair weather and trip only rig, so my pile of empty jugs in the garage will stop growing so fast.

We typically don't add DEF in any of our vehicles from January through April since we don't do a lot of driving during those months. This means that we're adding DEF the other 8 months. I've added as much as 7.5 gallons in our busiest months. We also carry a jug (sometimes two) when towing the RV on long trips.

I get between 2,100 to 2,500 miles per 2.5 gallon jug.

Are you planning to make any more trips out to New Mexico this year?

In June. We are going to Branson Mo. for a week. That's it far as I know. Unless the wifey is planning something.

Ironically, I'll be in that area sometime in June. My in-laws have a farm on the Missouri/Arkansas border, not too far from Branson (the way the crow flies).

Never recorded the DEF consumption but I have the feeling the it goes up by 30% while towing heavier stuff.

Thread derail-

We are going to be in northern NM end of May. Plan is to explore Santa Fe and Carson National Forests and then cross into CO and Rio Grand. Any suggestions for areas to explore or avoid? We try to keep off the pavement as much as possible.

That's a great question and unfortunately, I don't have any great answers. I live on the western side of the state (Zuni Mountains), so I'm more familiar with the off-road trails (forest roads/BLM) in my neck of the woods.

I've spent more time on foot in the Carson and Pecos Wilderness than I have in a Jeep. There are a lot of neat roads/trails throughout northern New Mexico, though. Are you tent camping?

So Platinum has been found to be better or just a preference? I've used nothing but Blue DEF regular so far (60k miles) with no issues, but if Platinum is really better then I'm open to change. I read early on about issues with Platinum so I've avoided it, but can't even remember the source and the source might not have been reliable.

I just stocked up on Platinum.

Roof top tents. I was looking at doing an overnight backpack in Pecos, but I don't think out timeframe is going to allow it.

Platinum is an additivated DEF which reduces deposit formation. It's highly recommended for those who do a lot of cold weather operation, short commutes, etc., in which the exhaust system doesn't get to the ideal temperatures.

That sounds like a great time! We typically setup basecamp and do day trips. We camped on the Red River (top pic) and the Pecos River (bottom 3 pics) last June. Nighttime temps can still fall below freezing in May, especially at the higher elevations.

We're slowly transitioning from La Niña to El Nino, so you might experience some moisture in May.

Does the PP still crystalized? Tried the Travelers Premium and it did.
How do you know it crystalized? Did you pull the DEF injector to see if there was deposit buildup?

The Platinum does a much better job at reducing deposit buildup than non-additivated.
