The gas engine actually has more power @285 vs 260hp from the diesel. You could experience this in an exaggerated way by taking each up a steep mountain road. The gas engine will beat the diesel up the mountain (admittedly with more exertion though). Or you could just race them on flat ground to top speed.

Horsepower = How quickly work can be done (Torque x RPMs / 5252).

Torque = the overall work that can potentially be done.

Before I get BERATED for being a complete smartass, the diesel will excel for what this vehicle is made for on-road (MPGs) and off the road (torque down low). No one in their right mind would choose the gas over diesel option if a) money wasn’t an issue and b) reliability was equal to the Pentastar.
I think you're wrong on that. My diesel gladiator on 37s with stock gears walks all over my brothers 4 door jl on 33s. Drag race from a stop or highway rolling starts, doesnt matter I always win by a lot.

5k on mine all very short city driving for the most part. No issues at all and not a single regret. I have a banks iDash to monitor my emissions closely due to my mostly city like driving.

Except what money? Diesel is very cheap to make yet higher energy content, in year 2000 refiners started pricing fuel taking this into consideration. Gas here today is $2.83. Diesel is $3.29. THIS IS BEFORE DEF COST. The only real reason to go diesel is towing convenience and towing drivability. With the voodoo emissions devices on diesel's today... maintenance now costs more, much more and longevity is now on par with gas jobs, not better. Add in The upfront purchase premium and diesel cost of ownership is a loser EVERYTIME.

4500 miles and no Problems or regrets. After driving a demo gasser there is no way I would go that direction. Tons of power and torque and will out pull a gasser all day long.

I’d love to see diesel up against the gas and run them up a mountain; say the Davis dam or I-70 west out of Denver.
I think diesel wouldwin by more than a few lengths.
You’re talking a 25hp difference but what, over 100tq?

I was able to accelerate at will on I-70 in CO.

PS Diesel clocks in 0.3 seconds faster to 60. ;)

That’s true, and I’m not sure how the diesel clocks a better 0-60 with less power and more weight, but it sure is faster where it matters at 0-60. Maybe overall drivetrain heat losses are just less?

Maybe that torque number being so high just flat out dissipates the HP difference. Again, I ain’t a 3.0 hater. If I had the extra cash, I woulda got it too.

I definitely could be! I’m not an FCA or automotive engineer by any stretch. Again, that diesel must run just a little (or a lot) more efficiently than the Pentastar.

I agree. I would need money to be a non issue to go with the diesel option (aka rich/retired well). The emissions equipment is just ridiculous and I’ve seen videos of FCA technicians agreeing or advising to stay away from the 3.0s.

I bought a new power stroke 7.3 in spring 99, loved it, towed a boat 11k on trailer loaded. Loved it. Diesel 73 cents a gallon...gas .99. year later diesel 1.40 gas 1.25. sold both and bought a mustang gt convertible. Lol

So you'd advocate for an extended warranty? How long? I'm thinking of factoring one in to my budget.

I forget because it's been a while and is ultimately irrelevant to me - but I did see somewhere that California requires them to warranty all of the emissions parts for a really long time (10 years?), but only for California purchasers.
I have one on order , owned diesels before bought it for torque & longevity , plus hoping mpg
come with 5 yr 100 k warranty the only extended offered is 7 year 125k for me I'll be 5 year 100 k so no reason to buy warranty. Look at the emissions warranty 3 yrs 36k , some items 8 yrs 80k
The new diesels are a challenge

With diesel more expensive at the pump, plus the initial $4000 more upfront. The fuel economy is a wash at best.

...and if you were planning on getting the 6-speed, it's $6,000 more with the added cost of the automatic transmission.

For this being a diesel owners question sure a lot of owners that are responding that don’t even own one. Maybe they should go drive or better yet buy one and then they could answer the question honestly.
