I couldn't stand the gaping holes behind the OEM Steel bumper in "shorty" configuration. There is one company out there selling a pair for $300 (which I didn't want to spend), and I also needed an area to mount my air-brake line and towing wiring connectors for flat-towing behind my motorhome.
A few pieces of cardboard for templates, a scrap piece of aluminum, and about FOUR HOURS LATER
, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I tried to hammer in the ends so that the piece could be flush but that was a lot of hammering, and not-so-flush. The ones available for purchase look to have some weatherstripping on the edges to cover the gap. I may put some on and drill out some more mounting points to the OEM bumper on the inside.
I am definitely keeping my day-job.
