Do I need to pretension an AEV installed winch?

Having buried a winch line 4 wraps deep doing a short hard pull on an improperly-tensioned winch drum - and having had a hell of a time trying to unfuck it without removing all the skin on the backs of my hands - safer to go tension it yourself in an empty field or parking lot. Finding out the hard way sucks

Yep! I helped a guy unfck his new winch cable by dis engaging it and pulling it put with my truck. It still took a little throttle to pull it out .

Not saying doing it again in the driveway is a bad idea, but the factory got back to me with the answer.

The winch is pretensioned by AEV “before they leave our facility so they’re all ready to go”.

I was just going to say, hook it to something and back up to save your hands and the effort.
