My father in law is telling me that my rubicon suspension and goodies that come stock on a rubicon will not be changed or effected if I get a new lift. Not the Tera flex or body lift but the normal 2+ inches lift.

True?

Installing a full lift kit involves changing the springs and shocks. How is that not a change to the factory installed suspension system?

Doing just a spacer lift would leave the factory suspension intact, but could affect ride and behavior. Without extension brackets, the shocks would be beyond their design limits. The change to the center of gravity after a lift can also affect behavior.

None of the rubicon "goodies" worth keeping are changed out. You'll still have lockers, wider axles, sway bar disconnect, better axle gearing, and the 4-1 transfer case. Obviously you'll change out the springs and shocks, but the shocks are short travel and not worth trying to save with extensions and the springs are too soft when you add any kind of gear, winch, or load. Thread a reason why rubicon take offs with low miles usually sell between $100-150... they aren't worth much. I threw the 1st set off our 2019 JLUR in the trash after trying to sell them for a few weeks. Even our 2022 xr suspension I only sold for $100. You aren't losing anything good going to a quality aftermarket suspension you're gaining travel, ride height, load capacity, and shock dampening (unless you put low quality junk on your truck).

2" or 4"? Spacer lift or spring lift? Very different animals. I'd say 3 plus and you need to change a lot of suspension and possibly driveline components if you want it drive correctly. Outside of shocks and springs You'll find you might need longer or adjustable control arms, adjustable track bars, track bar relocation brackets, rear control arm relocation brackets, better ball joints, upgraded steering components including the tie rod, drag link, and a shaft brace not to mention wheels and tires. If the lift is too tall your stock front driveshaft will be at too great an angle causing vibration and excess wear and at full droop it will sit on a cross member putting vehicle weight on the driveshaft; the stock shaft is not strong enough for that.

So this all depends on how tall you want to go. 4", as your title reads, will require a lot of thought and additional components.

I put the AEV 2" spacer lift in my mojave and it's been good for 24k miles. After adding the winch and bumper and wheeling it hard in the desert the front end is sagging pretty good. Adding 3.5" springs all around (removing 2" spacers) which should fix that plus a little more. In an attempt to make it ride even better on washboards at speed I added front geometry correction brackets (smoothed out the bumps a decent amount) and the rock krawler triangulated rear 4 link (biggest difference in ride quality and bump handling from any single mod I've ever done). I'm also flipping the drag link and relocating the front track bar when the springs go in. The more you lift the more you need to do, but some right it can absolutely ride and handle better than stock.
