Driver's side knee panel speaker removal...WTF???

Just got my Kicker KS (2 pairs of 3.5", one pair 4", one pair 6.5") today. One observation (maybe I missed this): the Metra 72-7902 which comes with the 3.5" does not work with the 4", however the 72-6514 which comes with the 6.5" pods (JP-1014) does, so that's good...just need to order a standalone set.
But I have a question...seems that the Metra harnesses actually swap the white and black wires. I presume white from factory harness/plug is positive...but when you connect the Metra adapter, that feeds into the black wire/negative terminal. Did anyone else notice this?

I didnt notice anything. As long as the circuit is complete...plug it in and see. The color of the wire is to help us not get things confused. A white wire connected to a black wire will carry a signal. If it plugs in and plays music you're golden.

i cant imagine all the rattles I would have after I took everything apart.

I had to go back in and wrap plastic connectors in foam. That's where my rattling was coming from.

It may carry the signal, but if the polarity is reversed and you run speakers out of phase, it will sound like crap. It just seemed odd that they were flipped. It seems the color-coding on the rears ends early and they just split to black/white wires to the individual speakers.

I guess your going have to see how it's wired at the connector? If they just grabbed a black wire and stuck it where the white wire goes and vice versa it's a non issue. Plug it in, if it sounds good your golden, if it doesn't your not.

Got the Insane Audio JL3001 coming today and an 8 channel amp tomorrow. I'm also gonna run an 8" powered sub. Hopefully will do the install Saturday.

Have 2 amps (one for speakers, one for sub) under passenger seat using JL amp rack. Pricey but works great. Bolts in using the same bolts as seat.

Where did you cut the speakers wires at to hook up to your amp?

Using the PAC Amp Pro which comes with a harness that plugs into back of radio, then connects to to factory harness. From there RCA cables run from PAC Amp to the amps. Then the speaker leads coming from amps are connected to an additional harness that comes with the PAC Amp. This connects back into the new PAC harness on back of radio. Sounds somewhat confusing, I know, but very simple setup that doesn't require any cutting off speaker wires.

How many leads on the harness coming back to the PAC Amp post amp? It's cool for sure. But if I were to use this I think I might be lose out on some of the digital processing I have via my 8 channel amp. I think I'm just gonna run new speaker wires and tap into the Metra harnesses. My old color blind eyes have a hard time telling wires apart.

The PAC Amp has 4 leads for main speakers, L R front and L R rear. It also has leads for L R on a non fading channel for the subwoofer. You can also purchase a fiber optic audio output to add on to the PAC Amp if desired. The installation is very easy, very straight forward, even though my description sounds otherwise, very much plug and play. It does a great job of fixing the output signal of the factory radio. That combined with the Kicker Key amps and tuning is almost completely automatic with the touch of a couple if buttons.

Did you need crossovers for the 4"? The 3.5" that I used for the dash came with crossovers but they're not listed as included on crutchfield.

Not as far as I know - they only have two terminals on the speaker itself.

For what it's worth, I ran into a complication with the Metra pods for the knee speakers. After installing, the passenger side sounded pretty good (with the 6.5" Kickers) - rich, good base response, no rattling, but the driver's side was crap. A noticeable lack in base response, and rattling/airy noises. As best as I can tell, the pod itself had a manufacturing defect and the unit was not sealed well (it's actually two pieces, not a solid piece). Awaiting for a replacement to arrive tomorrow or Tuesday, and hoping that solves the issue.

I put a seal with electrical tape around the edge of the hole where the speaker lays. Helps to seat the speaker.

Foam tape works well also.
