G'day all

I'm in CA and been out of the diesel world for a while . Last oil burner was a '11 BMW X5 that served me faithfully till 92k miles. I had my share of emission issues (and tow) but still loved the oil burner, the sound and the crazy highway milege (was averaging 26mpg combined and 30mp on freeway). Currently had the new BMW IX EV for prettty much all short and semi long runs (EV range is crazy good and I get like over 330 driveable miles easily).

Will be getting rid of my '19 Ford Ranger (really small rear seats, gas milege is ok but the small gas tank makes long road trips inconvenient but its been rock solid otherwise). Looking at purchase towards mid year and hopefully diesel '23 models are still available since '24 no longer does diesel.

I do know the downsides of modern diesel (and the fact that emission really kills any longterm reliability). But I'm still a diesel fool and the glady might be the last of diesel offerings in a mid size truck before CA pretty much kills anything and everything diesel (unlike the rest of the world where diesel is king).

Though I've been reading CA is putting more scrutinit on diesel engines and will be asking for smog every year!! Not sure of insurance rates either. Anybody here in CA with diesel glady and wishes they had gone with the gasser? Other than the egr, regen issue, is there any other red flags with Jeep's oil burner? I'm not keen on the gasser as I rented the Willy's in Maui last month and the gas milege was really crappy (16mpg).

Cheers!

I'm in CA and been out of the diesel world for a while . Last oil burner was a '16 BMW X5 that served me faithfully till 92k miles. I'm not in California, thankfully, but you asked a loaded question. You will find most of the oil burner guys knew what we were getting into and wouldn't have it any other way. The hate will come from people who "did research" and never had one outside of maybe a test drive before deciding the motor wasn't reliable. I've had mine for nearly 27,000 miles and 3 years. I have had 0 issues with the motor and trans. The DPF cleans itself through day to day driving, in the tippy top summer heat up steep inclines at highway speeds with a lift and 37's I see my oil temperature inch towards 265 degrees, around where the ECU will nerf the engine power in what we've termed a "de-rate", I have not seen it happen but others have had it happen to them and it sounds horrifying. If you stop when your oil is that hot and try jump back in, you'll likely get turbo heat soak, which happens to all diesels and the JT is especially susceptible due the small engine compartment, I've had this happen once on a day that we hit 119 degrees outside... can't say that's Jeep's fault as much as just an extreme in weather, after a five minute idle the oil cooled the turbo down and I was able to resume normal driving. I get 22-24mpg highway on a 2 inch lift and 37's all day and about 19 city.

I DIY my maintenance and am anal about being nicer to the truck than the factory recommends, I'm out a whopping $400-$450 a year in maintenance between oil, oil and fuel filters as well as DEF. The 3.6 is maybe $150-$200 for the same schedule, as the fuel filter isn't serviceable (atleast i think) nor is it required and it doesn't take DEF.. it also isn't as sensitive to not having the air filter on the cleaner side of things.

Wife and I both have diesels in Cali, she has 21 JLURD with 63k and I have a 23 JTRD with 21k.... LOVE THE DIESEL, HATE CALI (run by MORONS)

If we had to have that anemic 3.6 would likely wouldn't own jeeps

I'm not in Cali. I have 35,000 miles in 2 years on my '22 JTRD. The only issue I had was with the tonneau cover. Had 2 recalls. The tailgate latch and the fuel pump. Never had any issues with the fuel pump. I've used Hot Shot's EDT since the first fill up. As for DEF usage. I've been getting around 2,600 miles for 2.5 gallons. Before the 4" lift and 37" tires. Fuel mileage was 24 around town and 29 on a trip. After lift, 19 around town and 24 on a trip. Have a Banks iDash gauge and Pedal Monster installed. If you look at my build thread. You'll see I've done a lot.

The question is. If I did it again. Would I buy another JTRD. The answer is HELL YES.

21 JTRD coming up on 88K now. Got some bad diesel in Nebraska on my way to Cali last summer, but JScan got me past limp mode and not a worry since. Spent a month in Southern California and the diesel was perfect. Big freeway economy, great zip on mountain roads, no hassle just rolling through sand and rocks on trails. Other than the crazy fuel prices, it’s the perfect California truck. Enjoy.

Hate CA (mostly) for the reasons all suspect... that said, extremely happy with my choice of the diesel. Had ordered it specifically with my wants and the diesel is all I thought it would be. Have a '13 JK as well and the engine is amazing but, not a diesel for sure.
