I finally have an Ecodiesel Gladiator and looking at all of my options....why is there an auto start/stop function on a freaking diesel.

Well I was wonding what everyone uses....do you just get a Tazer or did you go the Banks piggyback or Green diesel route or another company that does some extra fancy things for the Ecodiesel....like change shift points or other bull crap. Just want to make the right decision on this instead of just doing what everyone else does.

Thanks.

I have both the Tazer and the Banks Pedal Monster, and the Derringer. I removed the Derringer until after I get the recall done.

You can thank the EPA for the extra diesel add-ons (ESS, DEF, etc.) that you don't want. There are multiple devices available to remember to push the ESS button on the dash for you.

I just turn it off every time I get in. I am not tempting fate with a Taser or anything else with the warranty issues on the diesels.

Congrats on the diesel!
Since you asked (maybe rhetorically), I'll explain the diesel ESS a bit. This thing is not your dad's diesel. ESS gets a bad rap because it's different and is sometimes poorly implemented but here are 2 important things to know: 1) Like many modern light-duty diesels, the ecodiesel shouldn't be left to idle indefinitely. it will build up soot in the DPF while idling which will eventually require an inefficient active regen cycle to occur to burn it all out. Also the combo of electronic fuel pump and low compression ratio make restarts smooth and very low fuel consumption. This situation is the opposite of how things were 20+ years ago, when it was sage advice to never shut off a diesel till you're done for the day.
2) The diesel has an uprated starter that fires very quickly. It is leagues better than the awful delay you get on some cheap gassers that makes ESS in them so hateful. I recall a rental Renegade being atrocious, night and day difference to the diesel gladiator.

As for the Tazer, you'll need it or a similar device to do a tune anyways if a tune is an eventual goal. Tune may or may not eliminate ESS, but the Tazer can.

OP, if possible get a delete tune asap using a spare ecu then swap back as needed for warranty work.

Get a tazer, well worth it for the other features it adds. Skip the banks stuff and just get a gde tune. The gde tune is an actual tune and transmission mapping package. The Derringer just fakes values and isn't a tuner at all. The pedal monster, is just another fake value adjuster. 10 percent pedal tells the computer it is 25% pedal, or whatever you tell it. Doesn't actually DO anything.
I do however have a banks pod monitor so I can watch other values.

The Pedal Monster does work. It takes away the lagging pedal response.
