I believe it is possible to bypass the EGR cooler without actually removing it by piping around it with heater hose. To remove it requires you to remove an 8mm bolt that is subject to constant heat cycles and was factory installed with no anti-seize. If (when) this bolt breaks it will cause you to waste hours trying to extract it and the neighborhood children will learn many new colorful words.
