I got home early the other day from work and my wife had plans to go out with her friend for lunch so I kissed her good bye and threw her the keys and said, have a great time. (If only I could see into the future)

When she was done and coming home, she calls me to say she accidentally left the truck running in the busy parking lot FOR THREE HOURS while she was enjoying the time with her friend over lunch and laughed about it! She said the engine was so quiet, she couldn’t hear it running and thought it was off.

My very 1st thought was, “what would ShadowsPapa say about this??”

My second thought was…I can’t repeat it here.

This second engine is very quiet and I do hope no damage was done. Omg

We used to idle cop cars for hours. Especially on graveyard shift. Other times on a scene where the overhead lights and radios had to be on. We would leave the unit running so as not to kill the battery. I carried a spare key so I could lock it while running.

Never had an issue and some of those old Crown Vics are still going.

I left my old Ram idling for about 8 hours once at work and 4 hours another time. It ran fine after, no codes or anything. Edit: I lied…this was definitely when my 5.7L started ticking lol.

Additionally, when I did oilfield work, we would idle trucks for the entire 12 hour shift. Nothing happened (unless It was a 3.5L Ecoboost - can’t remember why).

Not an issue. I've done that many times while I sleep at rest areas when traveling.

Wife and I have been there and done that on many occasions. I had the engine in a Crown Vic grenade on me in a pursuit, but otherwise they were almost indestructible. Fast, reliable and reasonably comfortable... we wore many a Ford out.

same thing here. When we had to leave our squad car idling at an accident scene to block traffic it would sometimes idle for 5 hours. No issues. One time I actually melted the plastic covers on my overhead lights during the summer. But car ran fine.

Course never idle a BMW M car turbo. Damn thing builds up pressure and next thing you know the whole area is filled with smoke and you are replacing a valve.

Didnt she hear the funky honking when she locked it while running?

I don’t know what she heard. I’ll have to try that and see what happens.

Left mine running over night and a second occasion of about 2 hrs! I wish the Jeep would let me know I've left it running or shut off after a period of time.

And people bitch about the thing honking when you leave with the FOB and the engine is running.
Do that in a closed garage.............

In 2021, or maybe 2022, they started having it HONK at you 3 times if you leave it running and take the FOB with you. But people bitch about that. This is the very reason they honk.
People have garaged their cars, not realized they have left them running due to how quiet they are, and bad things happen.

The CO levels are drastically lower on these because the CATs combine oxygen with the CO to form CO2 - but the side effect of that is still bad because you now have a lack of breathable oxygen.

A car left running for a number of hours in a closed garage will consume two parts oxygen for every part carbon in the gasoline. Eventually oxygen levels will fall to a point where a human will start to asphyxiate should they enter the garage.
