The 8.4 gets:
SiriusXM® Traffic Plus with 5-Year Subscription
5-Year SiriusXM® Traffic Service
SiriusXM® Travel Link with 5-Year Subscription
5-Year SiriusXM® Travel Link Service
That is actually a good point - I glazed over that because it had "Sirius XM" in it, but 5 years is a good timeframe - much better than the 1 year XM radio they gave me on JLU (with a 7in screen)

I get the data connection required thing I suppose....but I have yet to be anywhere where android auto google maps or waze did not work. I think maybe I have used the factory NAV once since i got the JT. No way I am spending $150 on an "upgrade" to an inferior navigation system that will already be way out of date.

I have been in some areas of MD, VA, and ME without cell coverage. I didn’t plan on being there or didn’t know I wouldn’t have coverage because I didn’t really leave civilization, so I didn’t download map data ahead of time. The UConnect Nav is a reliable backup for most situations. There aren’t that many road updates in areas where cell coverage is lacking. I never update the factory nav system, but I do use it on occasion.

The map update is provided on a USB stick. It includes an update to the latest Uconnect software, which is also provided on a USB stick. It is a one time process for each update. It takes about an hour with the engine running to apply both updates.
Honestly, this is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard in this day and age ...

An "HOUR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING" ???!?!?? WTF ???

An hour with the engine running is about a year worth of start/stop system activations ... For all of the attention paid to make everything as efficient as possible even to the point of creating twice as many batteries to waste landfill space, we now take an HOUR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING to update a GPS ?

Please someone pinch me ... (A bad pinch not a good one) ...

1) Give us money
2) We will send you a USB stick and waste packaging and delivery driver time/gas, as opposed to just letting you download something ... My Subaru connects to my home wifi from the garage for updates.
3) Back out of the garage (Do not run the truck for an hour in the garage and risk asphyxiating yourself)
4) Start the truck
5) If its hot out, turn on the air conditioning (To create more C02)
6) fiddle around for 20 minutes
7) Insert the USB stick
8) wait an hour while killing trees and endangering dolphins
9) oops, it failed, go back to step 3
10) pray
11) celebrate (you now have streets available in states you will never visit)
12) wait till next time
13) wash, rinse. repeat ...

Where is the EPA with all of these idling FCA vehicles littering the front yards of america ?

Yeah, I'm having fun here but honestly, what are they smoking and where can I get some ?

The updates come on a USB stick because they are too large to download over the cellular network. The engine has to be running to keep the update from being interrupted, which could brick the head unit.

Yes, I get it ... Fully understand ...

And it is still ridiculous ... The USB thing makes sense since they dont allow the head unit to connect to wifi like other manufacturers do ... Still behind the times and dumb ...

An hour to install an update that requires the carbon belching internal combustion engine to idle for an hour ? That is also dumb ...

Any electronic procedure that requires a vehicle to SIT RUNNING FOR A HOUR while doing NOTHING ELSE is just totally ridiculous especially given the hypersensitivity surrounding all things green nowadays ...

Yep, I understand the process and the reasons ... I also understand that it is a poorly engineered half assed afterthought that is downright silly ...

The updates may be possible without the engine running. The Uconnect update that the System downloaded and installed as part of the recall was done with the truck off. The directions to keep it on with the engine running come from the map update provider.

So, I got the e-mail too but for my wife's 2019 GC Ltd. I tossed the e-mail but now, I'm wondering if I did do the update, is it for one Jeep only or could I have also updated my Gladiator too ?????

I'm willing to bet it's going to be vehicle specific so if I were to also update the Gladiator, it's another $150...

The 8.4 gets:
SiriusXM® Traffic Plus with 5-Year Subscription
5-Year SiriusXM® Traffic Service
SiriusXM® Travel Link with 5-Year Subscription
5-Year SiriusXM® Travel Link Service
Talk to me like I'm dumb. Are you saying 5 years of Sirius for free if you have the 8.4" screen?

I plan my trips off-road with Gaia and OnX both now. I have an iPhone I issued myself from work, it's only job is to show OnX while Gaia is on the UConnect screen. Works swimmingly well. Downloading maps is cake, and updating them is a few taps.

We quit using the NAV completely when it routed us through downtown Ukiah for no reason. That was last summer during the fires, we thought maybe there was an issue - nope, just a stupid attack from an underdeveloped app.

The updates are model specific. The Uconnect update could be used on multiple vehicles, provided they are all starting at the same version level. The map update requires an authorization code to do the install, so is only good for one unit.

Took a road trip a few weeks ago to the middle of nowhere New Hampshire and Vermont with many areas lacking cell coverage.

Found when driving using either Google Maps or Waze that if you start the trip with cell coverage and a inputted destination with driving directions, it will track and give you direction through lost cell reception areas but if you stop and turn vehicle off in a lack of cell reception area and turn back on to continue the trip, the direction info gets lost but you still have basic GPS present positioning

Well, that's one advantage to not getting the 8.4 - no upsell trashmail ?

I have a iPad mini mounted and installed, Gaia GPS, Waze, Google Maps, and a butt load of other related stuff on it. The Factory Navigation is junk. The 5 year sub to Gaia GPS was less than half what they want for this stupid update and Gaia is much more capable. I have a little less than 50 gb of maps downloaded from Gaia. You can even download parts of Google Maps if you are going out of cell range, and that's free.
