The friendship thing seems to be the same no matter what the sport. Years ago I would have a boatload of guys out for fishing and recreation such as camping etc. Now, they all sit inside their homes doing nothing. My oldest, best friend, rarely leaves his house. He and I used to go fishing and camping at least twice a year. It's as though something turned off inside their brains. I met a guy in church a few years ago who loves to sail. He stopped by by a couple days ago and asked me to go out on his boat and crew with him. He's 87 years young and still hits the gym three days a week.

The point is, I suppose, sometimes we need to move on to new friends and stop mourning the old ones who have stopped living for some unknown reason, or those younger ones who simply cannot function without alcohol or pills.

Agreed. And who needs pills.

People come into your life for a reason, a season, and a lifetime. I truly believe this.

10 years ago, I met a guy on the Ram forum(s) that was full of life and very active. He owned both a Ram EcoDiesel and Ram Cummins. He towed a boat and travel trailer. A few years ago, I learned that he was 87 years old. I told him that he was an inspiration for many.

I couldn't have said it better. This is so true.

Sort of related to this, and something I have struggled with.

Between 2017 and 2022 I became pretty close with a group of guys as we spun-off from the local Jeep club, and we camped and wheeled all over the country. From Virginia to Arizona.

As the years went on though, they wanted to do more and more difficult things, and I didnt want to keep pouring the money and time to keep up. When I got my Gladiator I sort of sealed my own fate. It wasnt as capable as my JK was and I didnt have another $15K to get it there. I needed to use my truck like a truck, I had started life with my new ole lady, some things weren't as practical.

Then, the group canceled our overlanding type trip to Colorado we had planned and booked for and replaced it with a trip to the Rubicon Trail. My practically stock Gladiator on 33s was not going to be put through that, and it was three days one way, compared to the two to get to Colorado.

Well, that was the last thing we ever planned together. That group has since fractured apart.

Im not saying anyone 'did anything wrong'.

More saying - to your point, some people end up being for a season, and thats OK, even if its a little hard to digest. At least for me it was.

But, ive been picking at the Jeep lately and I WILL go west again, even if needs to be solo, to start enjoying things at my pace.

Maybe its with new friends.

TBD.

Heh.

Extending on this.

I have even tried reaching out to some of those friends on and off, and for whatever reason the calls are on deaf ears I feel like.

Heck they probably think im the problem.

Thats OK too.

@WILDHOBO I think you started a therapy session here šŸ˜‚

I’m in the same situation. I still have my CJ buggy but my wife and I are enjoying ā€œOverlandingā€ so much I am turning down the hardcore trips. But hey, it’s ok. I’m still Jeeping just doing it differently.
