The roads re-froze here. Being a goofball and showing off to the wife, I drove from a standstill up a frozen 8-10% grade hill (pavement). Tires were certainly going but I made it, and stopped at the top just BEFORE the crest to explain to my wife how if we had had momentum it would have been much easier, but too much and we could go into oncoming traffic (hill crested and goes immediately down to continue the backalley/street in an old neighborhood). Of course, standing still is fine, I try to go forward and end up sliding all the way back down.

  1. To de-ice, you can pee on it (not joking), poor vodka/alcohol, or spray with WD-40. WD-40 will free up frozen or rusted parts enough to get them moving.
Years ago my dad and brother were parked downtown when an Oklahoma snowstorm blew in. As they were headed back to the car, they saw a guy standing next to the driver side door. As they got closer, they could see he was urinating on the door.

"What the hell you doin'!", says Dad. To which the public urinator replies,

"Huh? Oh, I couldn't get the door unlocked. It's frozen, so I'm peeing on it to thaw it out. (Guy is clearly inebriated and should not be attempting to enter any car.)

"It won't unlock because that's MY car!", shouts Dad.

"Huh? Oh, shit. Sorry..." (Shakes it off, zips up, picks up some snow and wipes it on the car door, staggers off...)

Just another day in Okahoma...

When I know the Weather is coming, I take my Sunshade for the windshield and put it on the outside strapping the loops thru the inside with a bungie. I then pull the wipers out and away from the windshield. I bought some pipe insulation at HD for $2.00 for 6 ft and cut it to length for my wiper blades, and door handles and put it over all of them.
When coated with ice they all come off easily and no ice on the blades or the handles or the windshield.
I have done this with every car that's left out in freezing weather.

 I got a "ticket" for doing the same thing today.

Private property, enclosed compound, doesn't count for much.
My boss a park ranger wrote me a ticked for being a dumb ass that rides around in sub freezing temperatures with my doors and top off. It was hilarious.
