The story of my fuel filtered dilemma. I've changed my fuel filter when I changed my oil for the first time when I bought this Jeep in the early 2024. I had not changed the filter, even touched it. Until now, We took a trip out west in May, And after being gone for three weeks, I might add that I use the Jeep as a toad behind my motorhome. I started smelling diesel And after further investigation after a few days, I saw that I had a small drip coming from the fuel filter. I tried my best to tighten it with the tools that I had to no avail, So I just let it ride and brought it home. Last week I got here and had to use Large pair of vice grips To get the cap off. I installed a new cap. It went on smooth as silk and I tighten it up. it leak worse than before. I'm now waiting for a whole filter housing to arrive arrive to install it, But this is really a poor design. If it's going to leak that easily, I've been changing the same type of filter on my F250 for almost 20 years and have never had one leak from that filter. It's also under the driver's side Seat also, So I'll let you know what happens when I change the whole fuel filter housing?

BTW, it's very difficult to reuse the cap o-ring, the fuel will swell the ring and when you reuse it, it will get pinched and cut. I made the mistake once, when I removed the cap the check the filter and put it all back together. Now I only remove the cap when i replace the filter.

Good grief, fellows! The O-ring was replaced every time. The new cap came with an new O-ring, every filter comes with a new O-ring.
I lubricated the O-ring with petroleum jelly, thus it screws in smoothly until the O-ring engages.

Do you normally have the metal guard plate over the filter housing installed? Has the filter housing ever been hit on or by something? Have you inspected the current housing to determine why it's leaking?

Other than the rare occasion where people have smacked the filter housing pretty good on a rock and broken it while on the trail, there's really been no complaints of leaks other that yours that I've seen. The cap is sealed by its o-ring, so torqueing the cap tighter once it's already seated flush in the housing isn't going to do anything to stop a leak. In fact, since the cap and housing are both plastic, it's entirely possible to cause a leak by overtorqueing the thing and damaging it.

You might want to take a good look at the entire filter housing assembly as it's possible to have leaks coming down from the inlet and outlet lines above, but appearing to be coming from the cap.

Think you found your problem. Use diesel fuel on the o ring. The jelly may effect the o ring.

Drain valve, cracked housing or loose hose connection? Nothing else in that area.
