Gaia vs AllTrails vs ???

Any recommendations/comparisons for a good GPS app that works great with Apple CarPlay? I have the free version of Gaia and it does have a CarPlay app, not sure if any of the other do.


Only real off-roading I've done is at off road parks, but I'd like to get into riding trails/forest roads, camping, ect... I downloaded a KMZ file from the US Forestry Service of forest service roads, and found another kmz file of "non-paved roads in Georgia". I managed to get them uploaded into the app, but can't figure out how to click on the trails to get extra information like I can on the computer.

Any other options out there that would be better? Is it worthwhile to get a tablet mount and just run the app on the tablet instead of through CapPlay?

For me it is GAIA, it works great with carplay. I use it on a cheap dedicated Samsung android tablet (everything else is apple)...

I'm not sure when they added this, but if you go to your Jeep Owners page dashboard, there is a box near the bottom stating that all Jeep owners get a free six-month subscription to "onX Offroad Elite" app. which normally costs $99/year (at least the android version). I have android, and apparently there is a bug in the latest update that broke the android auto compatibility, but they are working to restore it. However, I believe it works with Apple CarPlay. I have been playing with it a little bit in the last week, and it seems like it has a lot of features. I liked the ability to track your path and record key stats along the way. I think it's worth trying out. There might be some more experienced users who can chime in on this.

Thats awesome, I did a bit of playing around in the OnX App, seems good. I also found an article about JeepWave getting the app for free for 6 months, but couldn't actually find where to register and get the elite app.

Around my area, the parks are all in Maprika.
Problem is, it is not Apple or Android Auto Compatible. So it has to run on your Smart Phone or Tablet.
It does work great though, and you can zoom in.
Gaia and OnX don't seem to have the actual Maps/trails, so they are not as useful.

I don't care about use on the screen so Android Auto or Car Play is irrelevant, I usually have the off road pages up there. I have my phone mounted next to the screen. The All Trails waypoints are great.

For me, the All Trails maps are the most straightforward and easiest to use. It's got good community input on trails and is used a ton for other things like hiking too.

I was confused how to register as well. If you go to the owner's dashboard:

There is a box towards the bottom with a link to the free 6 month trial. When you click on the link from the Jeep owner's page, it takes you to the onX page to sign up, and it preloaded the e-mail I used with the Jeep site. I signed up there.

When I downloaded the app on my phone, the app used my Android account e-mail, which is different from my Jeep account e-mail. I had to sign out of the app on my phone and sign back in with the e-mail I used with Jeep, and now it shows me having 6 months left. It's a little confusing - I almost signed up for two different accounts!

I use the Gaia paid version. Think it was 39$ a year. Gets me to where I want to go. Downloadable maps for offline use.
