I’m getting a P040 one code on my 2020 gladiator. I know that has to do with the EGR valve and I’m not sure what my first step would be to troubleshoot this or where the EGR valve is on the gladiator. Any help is appreciated….

First check the harness connector to it for corrosion/dirt. Spray some connector cleaner in there and see if that solves the problem but you’ll have to clear the code if you can.

I've begun having this error code on my 2020. I'll also check the connector.

If you have to order a new EGR, it doesn’t come with the crush gaskets. I was lucky to call it in in the afternoon and it arrived the next morning. I hope to get mine installed on the weekend.

My diagnostic tool has an EGR reset that is done when a new valve is installed.

How do you know it was the EGR valve that failed?

What do you recommend? My contacts all look clean without any dust or debris.

All I have to go on is my diagnostic tool smog test showing EGR as red. It’s remained this way for awhile now so I’m just going to replace it and see what happens. I don’t have a code yet and don’t want to wait for one. I like getting on top of things before they become an issue.

How is your vehicle running? What options do you feel you have? This would be my first EGR swap out. Very much a newbie dealing with it like can this just be taken off and cleaned by soaking in a cleaner. Others more experienced in this than i can chime in and give advice.

I learned about the “crush gaskets” that don’t come with it which made me think of having to undue the EGR cooler this last summer when I changed my spark plugs and the cooler also has crush gaskets I didn’t replace so I picked up replacement gaskets for that too. At the end of the day, I just want to see the EGR a green colour on the smog test.

Vehicle had been running well. I use 87 fuel. I don't have a smog test.

Thought I’d run another smog test last night as it’s been a few days and all I’ve done is drive it to work and back, 60 kms a day. All green. Still have the old EGR in there. It just needed more time to think about things and come around.

(21 JTR, 3.6, 113k kms) Seeing as how I had my new EGR valve and new crush gasket, I decided to change it anyway even though the smog test finally cleared and the EGR went green after several days of back and forth to work (60 kms/day) and, well, just because AND for the greater good of gaining knowledge and data points.

Some would say, ‘if the smog test shows green, all is well’ and they might be right BUT I collect 210ml oil/5000 kms in my catch can, now that I installed one, but I didn’t always have this thing and because the EGR draws in this oil rich air for reburn with other gas fumes, I “speculated” the EGR would be carboned up and not operating as effective as it could be. It definitely smelled like oil and had a bit of carbon in it.

I installed the new one in 30’min (my first time), recalibrated valve to 0, reset oxygen sensors and ECM, smog board lite up all (8 items) red and I went for a drive. 2 items are left to go green but man this engine runs smooth.

I just had the code pop up again. Should I drive it for a little bit to see if the code goes away? I also have an appointment with a dealership to have a diagnosis.
