I have a 21 Gladiator Overland V6 3.6 with tow package that im wanting to use to tow a Scamp 19 "5th wheel" fiberglass trailer. Has anyone done this yet? Im thinking of installing curt #16200 universal rails and curt #16055 bent plate with ball in it. Trailer weights under 2900 lbs and has a hitch/tongue weight about 400lbs or so. I see Tacomas and frontiers to them all the time so I figured why not a gladiator.

Unless you already own that rv, I don't see the point? I've never seen an ultra light weight 5th wheel hitch, so it could very well use up 10-15% of your available payload depending on how your truck is optioned.

I've owned/towed a 18' tag, 19' tag, 21' tag, 27' tag, 40' 5th, 37' 5th and numerous other equipment, dump, and utility trailers. I get the 5th concept and towing comfort in the larger rvs, but why the 5th for the little guy? The Jt can easily tow that size in a tag and use the bed space for the cargo capacity you didn't lose?

I have two of them and i do have other trucks that i can use, but i want to give the jt a shot at it. The hitch weight would be a little over 100lbs. Im not concerned about the bed space, the scamp has plenty of storage available in it.

I know there is someone on this forum that did, or does, do this.

@CrazyCooter
I was also baffled by this..it just screams ridiculous to me. But, when I brought that up before, i was schooled in the difference in towing at the hitch v/s over the rear axle. Needless to say im more informed but not moved from my original “this thing is ridiculous” assessment.

Doesn't work for me, but it sure could for someone else. I'd also rather have the pivot behind the bumper to aid in getting into tighter places.

I bet she is one finger stable bumping the speed limiter though! :rock:

If you still feel baffled, look up scamp 19 tow vehicles... you would be surprised at what people use to tow... these things are small and lights... this is an example

Comes under the "because you can, should you?" heading.

Hitch weight - 100 pounds from payload - what's the "tongue weight" so to speak of the trailer? What does it put on the truck when hooked up?

Tow Package on my 2020 Sport S is 6,000 lbs and 500 lbs tongue weight. Look at the owners manual, it will tell you. Looks like it should work week

Well under payload for sure, with pounds to spare. Won't be worse than tossing 500-600 pounds in the back and these handle that easily.
