(1 ton axles, TBI 350, 39" BFG, bla, blah, blah) trail rig to my JT.

I knew the JT would be a "compromise" but I havent' used my "trail" Jeep to it's potential for 8-10 years except for a 1-2 day bout per year. It was mostly on Moab trails some St George UT stuff and used primarily for putting around town on the weekends. It was basically a rock crawling competition vehicle from about 2000ish technology era? I have NO complaints with the rig and have used it to help raise our 3 kids.

Going to the JT, I knew there would be trail compromises. I won't treat a $60k vehicle like I would a $12k, 20 year old vehicle. However, I sold the V10 F350, sold the two hauler trailer and am working on selling the trail Jeep after busting up the Jeep pretty good at RR4W Labor Day camp out 2022.

I bought my white diesel JT the Friday after Labor day. I've put 9k miles on it so far. Have over 12 trail days in it and have really enjoyed it. It gets 18-20 mpg with the 37" MTZ at 80 mph and if I was willing, would probably go 98% of the places my trail Jeep would go. I have NO qualms running the JT as it is in about 95% of the places I took the trail Jeep. It's actually a better climber than the trail Jeep (100" wheelbase vs 135" or whatever) if you can clear the rear overhang. I've only been in a couple of situations where the overhang REALLY limited me but I'll just adjust my lines (sometimes some trails) and drive around the overhang.

My biggest concern with off roading the JT is the belly height. I need to get under there and figure out what's vulnerable on the diesel. Learn to drive around that as well and guard it up.

I bought it as it sits and have added HAM, GMRS and CB radios and an ARB twin air compressor. Aside from the 5' bed length, (I wouldn't want it longer unless I'm using the JT as a truck) I have VERY little to complain about and a lot I really like.

There have been 3-4 days where I REALLY wanted to have the F350, but I found a way around needing the HD pickup and either used the JT or called a friend with an HD pickup.

There's been a couple times on a trail where I REALLY wanted the other Jeep. However, I had driven my JT to the trail and needed to drive it home. I ended up spectating in Nasty Half trail at Sand Hollow and actually ENJOYED not having my wallet on the line. Different place for me but so far, a welcome one

YMMV

The ZR2 is probably better as a ā€˜high speed’ off road machine and highway runner. For old school dirt and rock you can’t beat a Jeep. The ease of modification and the relative simplicity favor the Jeep. Adding a winch for example is easy peasy, I did it solo in my yard with a bag of tools in a few hours. Working on the suspension and axles are likewise much easier with the solid front.

Good visibility with a lower hood and wide axles let you pick your lines and check tire placement without relying on cameras.
The Jeep is factory ready for 35’s, including the spare tire well. Thoughtful touches like aux switch leads, floor drain plugs and hard button to turn the screen off are nice. Sturdy tow hooks and integrated stubby bumper (steel group) remind you that Jeep has been doing this for a long time and listens to user feedback.

Being able to pull the roof and doors easily won’t get you further down the trail but will make the experience so much more enjoyable.

Overall I don’t think there is a more capable factory off road pickup. The classic lines and community of support complete the package.

One thing I will add is that with a jeep wrangler/gladiator you are almost guaranteed (unless you trash it) a higher resale/residual value than almost any vehicle out there besides maybe some Toyota trucks.

So I’m in a Colorado ZR2 currently but am looking for a gladiator for the better off-road performance and easier mods like lifting it and fitting larger tires. Was just curious how impressed you are with your gladiator off road, it’s going to be my do it all vehicle so I need some utility but would also like to be able to off-road some moderate to harder trails. I know all about the wheelbase and all that stuff so no need to go into that but I need a bed and to be able to tow so a wrangler really isn’t an option. Thanks!
My JT Launch edition on 37s with a 2.5" lift has never come close to letting me down, very capable. It makes me smile every time I get in it.

I have a sport with open diffs. 37 mud terrains and 2.5 Clayton lift. It will walk up some crazy stuff. I really haven’t missed lockers yet. I’m in north east ga. Not many rocks but it’s just so good off-road and it makes me smile every time. You will not be disappointed

Insanely impressed with the gladiator off-road and on road. Wouldn’t trade it for any other vehicle. It’s endlessly modifiable to whatever your needs are plus it’s a ton of fun to drive. There are things about it I don’t love, like the white non insulated roof, but that is a fairly easy fix.
I’m thinking of doing this.

We have owned everything from POC vehicles to high end luxury and my Mojave is by far the best vehicle we have owned. We use it 80%-85% pavement pounder and the rest overlanding and beach running. More than capable to do what we put it through...

Just want you to know, this one right here is enough to kick in my fear of heights, yes this picture.
@LostAndStranded these are pretty darned capable off road, more so than most drivers are.
The bigger question is what utility are you looking for? Mine is my daily driver and general haul-it truck but I must admit, it is very limited on that side. There is a reason that I still have my 3500.

Rubicon w/Manual Trans Stock Suspension: 4 LO, locked F/R 3rd Gear and it just goes. Hasn't let me down yet, haven't had to use the winch yet. 1st Jeep, still excited when I see it in the driveway.

Also, I think it rides fantastic but it is solid axle so wash board will make you pucker at speed. Fit and finish is top notch too.

Bonus, door and roof come off, whole other world!
And it looks good parked at Shady Glen.

Coming from someone who has owned a few off road vehicles, I will tell you that this Gladiator has been the most capable (factory) vehicle I have ever owned. There is only 1 exception and that was my Toyota FJ40 from back in the 1970-80's.

My Rubicon Gladiator has everything that could be placed on it from the factory minus the snorkel kit (including the seat heaters which has been very therapeutic for my lower back).

I work a blue collar job and need the bed to haul around stuff and am looking at getting a small travel trailer for my wife and I

Heard that. Especially when you are sitting at the bottom looking up in the queue. Beauty is, there is only 1 way out ?. Funny thing is, loved it so much, went back around and did it again.

Slow and steady wins the race. ??
