OK went and test drove some gladiators today with the wife. I'm coming from a 2013 f150 so still debating going to midsized truck. Wife had a concern with safety of them, specifically for passengers in the back since our 7yr old would be riding back there. What are your thoughts /experiences on safety performance of the Gladiator? Thanks

Last I had looked there wasn’t much for crash test video stuff on them besides a frontal impact.

But they have no air bags for rear passengers and just front and side for front passengers.

you could probably look into some of the stuff on the JL for an idea. If memory serves the rear passengers head impacted the C pillar area on a side impact (on the JL).

The Gladiator is not the pinnacle of Saftey but i would assume it will get similar scores to the Wrangler. The NHTSA has done some Gladiator specific tests but the IIHS does not look to have.

I would guess it is middle of the road in a single car crash with an immovable object but in a multi-car accident where the Gladiator gets hit by another car I think it will do pretty well, it high up and has a solid frame under it, IMO those two things can make a big difference and often doesn't show how beneficial it is in the crash tests.

Jumping up on my soap box

“Mass wins EVERY Time” how many times have y’all heard that one? Well with today’s autos that is part of the equation. So your standard Ford truck or SUV (put any competitor make and model in here)has the mass AND all the airbags and safety you can buy. They are MUCH safer IMOP than the Gladiator.

I was stuck in 4 hours of traffic Monday afternoon in Indiana behind an accident where a 2009 Toyota Avalon crossed the interstate median, hit and went through the steel cable divider and slammed head on into a 2021 Jeep Gladiator. The Toyota Avalon Driver (no passengers) is injured but not severely. The Jeep Gladiator driver is dead ( no passengers and I didn’t see the Gladiator, it did catch on fire but good sams pulled the Gladiator driver out before flames reached him. He was deceased on impact). The Avalon even in ‘09 had all the airbags and there is no telling how they hit as I have not seen the pictures, but statements says “near head on” bumper to bumper.

So when my kids were young we always had a Ford Expedition for long drives and even game night drives for volleyball. Today we have an SUV for the same trips and that ting has airbags everywhere.

Jeep either can save and make more money because of the specialty vehicle tag on wranglers and Gladiators allows them to avoid expensive safety additions. Or there just isn’t a way to add the airbags and safety, but I find that hard to believe.

We all take risks based on what it is worth to us, but with our kids it seems the better option is to go the safety route.

I do drive my Gladiator and my wrangler previously to Michigan with my youngest daughter once a year. I drive speed limit or slower and I’ve had some training on handling vehicles in many adverse situations. That is my excuse for driving the Gladiator on those long trips once a year with my daughter. The rest of the time we are in a family SUV.

For the money, you will not beat the Ford pickup or the Expedition for safety.

Not a gladiator but I had a 2014 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited and in 2018 I was in a pretty bad wreck in it.
I had my doors off, and the soft top on. A kid in a Mazda 3 hit me between 80/100kmh running a red light. He hit me on my drivers side (door/front wheel area) mind you I had my doors off. It ripped my front axle out and I rolled it into another SUV.
I came out alive, injured but alive. Also mind you I was lifted on 37s which I’m sure also helped to save me as the tire took the brunt of the impact as well.
The driver of the Mazda as fine, the passenger had to be cut out of the car and she broke some bones in her face.

I bought my Gladiator based off this accident. I can tell you if I wasn’t in a Jeep I wouldn’t have been so lucky. While people say it isn’t the safest vehicle, it 100% saved my life.
Just my biased opinion on it.
