So I sold one toy for another and bought a used 21 Gladiator Sport w/ 27K miles. During the test drive I heard nothing because the radio was on and we never took any sharp turns. Deal closed after hours and I noticed a funny sound that I thought was coming out of the front end but have been told by the dealer that it “needs to have the rear differential serviced” ($199 NO). Other small details that I am upset about but I digress.

I have owned Jeeps before and have never heard the noise coming from the rear. My worry is that the vehicle has a tow package and the rear is worn. Anyone have any experience with grinding in the rear differential?

Took 2 weeks for the service appt. and I have 30 days to return it. My mind has gone to the dark side on this. Where was the "1xx point inspection" that’s supposed to catch these things?

If it has LSD diff and only happens while turning. The previous owner probably had changed the fluid and didn't added additional friction modifier.

It's all depending who (what tech) did the inspection. The best inspection is your own inspection

For the time being I am going to make the dealer replace the fluid because that's the way it was sold "after" the inspection. It's a feel an it's audible so I don't know how anyone would have missed it (but me). I want it visually inspected too.

We also had the other tropical storm blow thru here today and when I got in to take to the dealer I found a small puddle on the passenger floor. It hasn't rained here since April. Dealer told me that the floor mat plug wasn't secure and it probably came from the road. Problem - puddle was there before I drove it.

The 1XX point inspection is a joke. My JTR was a CPO and had a 125 point check "done" to it. When I inspected it, several things that they said they checked were not OK and/or missing.

All paint inspected/chips repaired, Nope. Smokers Group there and functional, Nope. There were 2 or 3 other things that were the same. Salesman became a bit defensive and I told him, your people inspected it and certified this list as the condition of the truck. I told them that they need to fix the paint they said was OK, either supply inspected or missing items OR deduct these things from the price, or we were done. Yes I was being an a$$. All the tech had to do was check the not present box for the missing things and I would have been ok (except the paint). Because the dealer made a big deal about the inspection, it cost them $550 off the already negotiated selling price and I had to wait a week for their paint people to fix the chips and scuffs.

The paint people did do a great job though.

I had to go to the dealer to pick up the JT but I brought my paperwork with me and explained that I would like to return the vehicle. I finally got to a manager who immediately tried to up-sell me into a brand new one. It was a nice Willy's but not at the monthly $$ I was quoted.
Got the runaround for a couple hours while they fixed mine in the shop. I did get it back in good working order and the issue is resolved. It is still under warranty and it's a toy not a DD. I work from home. Moral of the story is to avoid that dealership!
