Hi Folks, love to shoot and have a nice size collection...

Just got my Mojave 3 weeks ago, absolutely love it, a joy to drive. Only slight "disappointment" is the size of the so called "lockable storage" which can be unbolted and carried also. Anticlimactic given the ta-do they made in the press about it. Why, kinda small, I was hoping I could at least transport a pistol or two in it (if not a rifle), no dice, not even close, just too narrow.

In NJ, unfortunately, all firearms' need to be locked up in a trunk, or an interior spot (which doesn't include the glove box). Or you have to put a lock on the trigger for each firearm in tow.

Don't want to bother with lock and key, so the space left to me is the Truck Bed which does lock like a trunk.

So my question for those of you who carry firearm's (rifle pistol) in the truck bed, what means are you Guys using to tie them down in the bed (to make sure they don't move)?

I also have heavy steel target plates which also need to be secure in the bed from moving.

I am new to Jeep and new to Trucks too (first one) so any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
-Joe

Going to be smart here, but the real solution is to move out of NJ.
As someone who spent the first 39yrs of his life in NJ, I second this!
Of course, I originally moved to CT, which had pretty good gun laws at the time. Then the SHTF with Sandy Hook, and now it's almost as bad as NJ and quickly catching up, so I moved to NH.

That said, I just use rifle cases (even for pistols) in my covered bed. I have a rubber SmartLiner in the bed, so they really don't move around back there. Of course, even locked I don't leave it unattended anywhere with the guns in it.

Guys, please give me a break about living in NJ, I'm sure you can figure out how many time in the last 10 years of being actively involved with the Gun Community I have been lectured about it . :)

I do very much however appreciate and want to thank both of you for your on-topic tips/idea's!!!

Nah, not a lecture, more like friendly ribbing. My dad was a competitive shooter up until his late 70s, and I tried a long time to get my parents to leave. Finally gave up. So I get it. The state has a lot going for it, except for everything it's politics screwed up, but that discussion is for a different place.

Did I mention just a few hundred miles to the north we have constitutional carry and virtually no gun control laws? :P
Sorry, can't help myself, lol.

Could you secure them via a MOLLE system behind the rear seat and simply lock the seats?

Thanks, I have the smartliner also over the factory spray in liner and agree with you that they should stay in place almost alway. Except for maybe a sudden stop at decent speed avoiding an accident (or God-Forbid) worse. So yep, it is more for that One-Off, hope it never happens, event.

There really isn't much room behind the seats, not in my Mojave anyway...

Ya know, I was think about this the other day, Jeep goes out of its way speaking to all the storage you have, but most of it is small area storage. I was hoping to store the guns in the lockable, removable, storage under the bottom of the seats which comes with the MO, but it is way too narrow to even fit a pistol case in it, never mind a carbine. (It is good for other smaller stuff though).

When I was transporting a truckload of guns across MA to NH, I ran a cable from a bed tiedown point, through the handles of all the cases and padlocked it to the tiedown on the other side of the bed.

It you just want to keep them in the bed in case of a crash or rollover, a rope, or maybe a cable with carabiners on each end, or even a ratchet strap might do.

That is probably what I will do, something like that...Given that the lockable spaces in the cabin are too small for a firearm, I have to put them in the bed. Luckily the Bed locks so I will not have to put a lock on each gun....I ordered some 15' Rhino ratchet straps from amazon for general purpose use and they should work well for this I think...

The steel target plates are another matter and present a bigger challenge because they are "thin" front to back, tougher to get a hold of them. But we will see.

I actually did padlock each case as well, because MA is a lot like NJ or NY. I figured better to take away as much wiggle room as possible if something happened.

I just throw my guns in the back, the tonneau cover hides them nicely. I keep my rifles in a bag each, and my pistols in a bag or in my range bag. No problem at all.

I also carry my HOLLOWPOINTS back there as well. (sorry, I couldn't resist  )

I't been a long time since I lived there, but unless something has changed recently, the whole NJ hollowpoints thing is mostly a myth. I believe the gist of the law is, if you do something illegal while you have hollowpoint bullets, it's even more illegaler, or some such nonsense. Of course, since almost everything gun related is illegal there, the bar is set pretty low.

Very true and still true, you can keep HP in your home, and you can transport them to the range for sport. All perfectly legal and documented on the NJST web sight.
