weight will have little if anything to do with mpg. All things being equal, they have inertia in both directions, if you get my meaning.I also thought about that as well, lighter will in theory be a bit easier on the MPG loss. Guess it is a balance on what you really want to achieve overall. In a fantasy world I'd like to keep my 20mpg and get a nice larger off road capable tire as tall.
Let me muddy the waters a little bit…I have a 23 Freedom and my biggest concern is rolling mass (didn’t take that into account on a 2012 Jk and hated it) with only have a 3:73 gear. My next concern was can I run a 315 x 70 x 17 without lift. So after a month of research I went with Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT on AEV Salta XR wheels with +25mm offset. This package weights 86lbs per wheel (tire 52lbs wheel 34lbs) and for me this setup is quiet, smooth riding, still has good acceleration, and absolutely no issues with rubbing. These are the factory tires on fully loaded Ford Broncos. So I have been back and fourth on tires multiple times. I have researched threads and read a ton of reviews on every tire out there. I've narrowed it down to two tires mostly due to the price and sizes. I do not plan to put a lift unless I do the Terra Flex 1.5 and Daystar 3/4. For now I would just like to do tires and from what I have read both of these tires should fit my stock Gladiator without rubbing or any issues. I will do a few trails a few times a year, run on some trails in the woods/mud on my property and will be traveling interstate every week which will include traveling in snow in the WV winters. I will not be doing any hardcore rock crawling and will mostly only go on green or blue rated trails. I am leaning towards the BFG's as they are on sale and I think that is a great price compared to what I have researched.
I have these as well. Great tire. Not too noisy. Great performance. As far as all terrains go, take a look at the following:
Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T
We have been thrilled with the Baja Boss A/T. I personally run these on my wifes RAM 1500. They are the quietest all-terrain I have ever driven. They have a 50K mile tread warranty and are available in plenty of sizes. To include sizes the same or very similar to what you shared.
Good looking and capable rig! Thanks for the update!Just got them installed BFG 285/75r17 so far on the 45 minute drive home I’ve not noticed any change in the mpg… per the dash…. Ride is better and I actually think they are just as quiet or even quieter than the stock tires. Before and after pic.
I say BFG, they have a great reputation and the company isn't new to the game. I almost went KM3 before deciding on nittos at a great price. I'm running 295/70 on my stock rims. I did feel a difference in acceleration unfortunately and understand I should look at gearing before 35's. For now I'm pretty happy. So I have been back and fourth on tires multiple times.
