weight will have little if anything to do with mpg. All things being equal, they have inertia in both directions, if you get my meaning.I also thought about that as well, lighter will in theory be a bit easier on the MPG loss. Guess it is a balance on what you really want to achieve overall. In a fantasy world I'd like to keep my 20mpg and get a nice larger off road capable tire as tall.
the biggest factor is wind resistance. When you get a bigger tire, it has to go through the air. (Think of all the fairings on sports cars keeping air off the tires). There’s some good articles out there showing the math. Forward cross sectional area Similarly wider tires do all but nothing for float and little If Anything for traction. They can effectively reduce your contact patch size. I’ve been trying to figure out the logic of the current fad out here to have super spaced out wide tires on what look to be otherwise “well intentioned” builds on Jeeps. Maybe there’s a rock crawling advantage offsetting the disadvantages? Maybe it’s the jeep equivalent of Carolina squat. Maybe they just like hucking debris into windshields.
