A friend of mine did the same thing with his Willys. Factory setting of 32.57". A brand new 255/75r17 tire diameter is around 32.1". Go figure.

None of your business.
FWIW, The mileage numbers I provided are hand-calc’d. That said, the instrument cluster is impressively accurate. Within .2-.3 MPG of actual, and once was shortchanging itself by .2 MPG.

On my typical 126 to 128 mile round trip, it’s within a mile or two of what I believe to be true distance measurement.

iPhone GPS app shows indicated 80mph is actually 79.

21.7 is the best I’ve ever seen on mine driving on I70 driving towards Baltimore. I average 19.5 - 20 normally around the house.

I was getting around 21 mpg with stock 255/75r17 Firestone mudders. I thought, "wow, this is great". I connected my analyzer to it and noticed that the tire size value in the computer for those factory tires was 32.57". I measured the tires and they were 31"! I think a little trickery was used from the factory to get the mpg up. I reset the tire size to 31" and lost 1.5 mpg. I replaced those tires with 285/75r17 tires and re-entered the correct value for the new tires. Now I am getting 18-19 mpg. My point is that what you think you're getting may not be what you are actually getting!
Both of my JTs were set fine - checked with GPS against odo.

Speedometers and GPS rounds. Speedometer may show 80 but really be 79.7 while GPS shows 79 and it's really 79.3
When things round it may look like 1 mph off but could be a fraction off in reality.
That's why I use odometer if I want to be really picky.

I use FuelUp on my phone and have found after multiple tanks the app and the cluster display are amazingly close. One time the cluster may be a tad high, the next time a tad low, but if you average multiple tanks, it comes out extremely accurate.

Both my friend's and my Willys had Firestone Destination M/T's on them. It is possible that the Willys JT's with the BFG M/T's are set correctly. I don't know the actual diameter of the BFG's, but they are 255/75r17 as well. Could be the Firestones run small, and the change in diameter was not made at the factory. Who knows. At any rate, I think 18-19 mpg with 34's is magnificent!

Just took a 1500 mile trip from Colorado through Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and even a little Montana and through Yellowstone . A lot of high climbing passes, strong winds , manual automatic braking and heavy traffic a few times and I averaged 24.4 MPG with 85 octane gas. Overland 3.6 with 3:73 s. Got back to the last 100 miles in Colorado and ran in to their wonderful fresh chip seal. Tractor trailer threw up a rock and broke my windsheild ?

I laugh, and cry, every time a "Jeep mpg" thread comes up.

Laugh because: WTF? You get 24mpg? Do you drive it out of the driveway? That's hilarious!!!

Cry because: Its a Jeep, not a damn Prius. You don't buy a Jeep for mpg. You buy a Jeep because there is nothing on the planet more capable off road. Y'all bitching about "gas mileage sucks" are ruining what a Jeep is about...what its intended purpose is. You want to go to the mall? Buy something else. Already getting the stupid a$$ Renegade grill. Just stop.

Mine also improved around the 15,000 miles mark. Don't mind when my truck does almost as well as the minivan.

I noticed that the long term average reported on the trip displays is not really the average over the entire trip, just over the most recent some number of miles. You can have an average of whatever over thousands of miles, but when the conditions change the reported trip MPG changes pretty quickly.
