Yes- I made a skid plate for the tire... I guess that is what you would call it. I got stuck badly once dropping into a mudhole and the center hole of the tire had a giant rock get stuck inside it before my tires couldn't touch the ground in the rear...front tires were in the mud. The intent of this skid is to keep a stump of rock from getting stuck inside this space...requiring a jack to lift the Jt off of the rock. This was my solution...

Here was the moment I figured out why the front and rear tires were spinning but...the rears were not touching the ground yet and I was going no where! It was hard to see over the hood the rock hanging off the middle of the ledge going into the puddle. lots of digging, jacking and pushing to get the tire up and over the rock.

What did you make that out of? It needs to be able support a lot of weight.

Looks like 1/4 or 5/16 aluminum plate cut out of round bar? Guess just a slice of the round bar? Through bolted to other side of wheel?
Edit: 1/2 inch?

It was 5/8... and I just run the bolts through the wheel stud holes with washers and nuts. I know that the chances of it getting into that exact position again might be small...but I feel better about dragging this over rocks... I put a couple of drain holes in it so water comes out too. And yes it was just a slice of 17 inch round bar!

Yeah... I'm not protecting the rim or tire really.... It's about the hole created by the tire mounted this way, that makes it a catch you on objects when you go over a rock or a stump. Without the cover your tire will slide over a rock, but then the rock on the approaching edge (will or could) be in a position to grab you and hold you as the rock has now filled the void of your spare. It also will pack with mud or snow creating a scoop that grabs things...instead of sliding over them.

I hadn’t considered that being an issue. Thanks for sharing! Can you explain what you did to make and mount that? Would be helpful to others.
I ordered a slice of 17 inch alum. cut 5/8 thick. cut a piece of cardboard to match the hole pattern of the rim, measured the distance from the holes to the edge and drilled them out. I used 10 inch long grade 8 bolts (but each rim style might be slightly different). Nuts and washers... and you can bolt it to the rim. To change the tire...you just have three bolts to take off. You can lower and raise the tire without removing the plate. I found the plates on Amazon and e-bay... just searching for 17 17 inch alum disks. There are a couple companies... and the prices vary! Mine was 37 dollars.

wonder how difficult it would be to cover the whole wheel and tire and use either steel or aluminium and cover it in UHMW plastic, wish is a really hard plastic that people use on skids since it slides off real easy compared to aluminum wish is soft and can sometimes get you hungover on rocks compared to steel wich ive experienced myself
