My dilemma is I’m putting 35s on my new JT. I’m supposed to go in today to have Toyo Open Country AT3s installed in size 35/12.5r17 (59 lb). I worry that I may regret not getting the Toyo Open Country RT Trails in same size which are 68 lb. I really like the sidewall and tread design of the RT Trails but I’m trying to keep the weight of the tire down hence the decision to go with the AT3. I’m pairing the tire with a 29 lb. wheel.

Buy the tires you really want. Diameter is a bigger issue. The factory 285 Falkens are nearly as heavy as the RT Trails. (63 pounds)

Anything on rotating assembly: tire, rim and such will make a huge impact at smaller weights. You will be able to tell if there is 9lbs extra weight on each corner when it spins due to physics. I installed wheel spacers that are 5lbs each and I could tell the difference.

9lbs is negligible as far as tires on a 5k+ lb vehicle. Run the tire you want.

static and rotating mass are different. While 9lbs times 4 in the bed of the truck would be not noticed 9lbs on each rotating axle will make difference.

You'll notice. height and weight play into this. even a smaller tire with the same weight will feel different. because of how that weight sits in relation to the axis on which it rotates. Ever notice the closer you move weight to the center on a merry go round, the faster you can spin it? same effect. It'll be most noticeable on acceleration, uphill grades, and braking. That doesn't means its bad though. It can feel totally fine and is completely doable as a daily.

The jump from a 32" tire to a 35" tire will have more effect than the weight increases.

I think his question more was towards the same size tires but different weights.

It was, but he also has a Willys that came from the factory with 32" tires.
The factory Rubi/Mojave tires are heavier than the Toyo Open Country AT3s he's looking at, and the RT is only 4 pounds heavier, and 2" bigger.

Define "make a difference"? 1% change in fuel economy? 1% of 15mpg is still 15mpg. 2% shower 0-60? 2% of 7+ seconds is still in the 7's. Again I didn't say there was 0 difference, I said it was negligible as it is in my experience.

Look at Lunentucker post above, compare Red v Green setups on dyno. That should answer your question with 12lbs extra on each corner.

Run the tire that you want, but keep the weight in mind. You have already chosen a reasonably light wheel.

I don't really feel tires are a place to save weight unless maybe you are racing and exotic materials can be used in place to maintain structural integrity and puncture resistance. Wheels are weight saved forever, so I like to do my weight savings there.
