Back in December 2022 I replaced my fuel filter. I noticed metal in the bottom of the filter housing. So I removed the volume metering solenoid on top of the HPFP to inspect for metal. It was in there also. Back then I had a great relationship with the service manager at a local dealership. I sent him photos and he scheduled me to have the pump replaced. To do it under warranty he said the tech has to find metal in the system. I cleaned out the bowl in the HPFP when I checked it. It was 8 miles to the dealership. To make the story short, the tech did not find metal and they did not replace the pump. He said drive it.
That was a little over a year ago. I too have been waiting for the parts on the recall and have my appointment Jan 30, 2024. I ended up going to another dealership because my friend moved to another dealership somewhere. I spoke with the my new "Friend" service manager and told him that I have metal in my system. I documented it yesterday by removing the metering valve again and taking pics. I also changed my fuel filter and it is in the filter housing and again in the top of the HPFP. He said that the recall is very strict on the procedure and his mechanic will have to find metal. I said that I have photos of the metal in both locations and had their parts department order everything needed to do a complete fuel system replacement. He said that is ok but they will see when I bring it in.
The pump and a few parts are in but a fuel rail and O-ring are on backorder. I want to make sure all the parts are in their hands when I bring it in in case they find metal.
If they don't find metal he said I can wait and the Jeep will be ready in a couple hours. If they find metal he said he needs it overnight.
I am including a few pics of what I sent both dealerships. The first one and now the second one. I guess it doesn't matter if the owner finds metal and documents it but I will have this in case they only swap the HPFP and I have fuel system issues later on. I really wanted to get the failing HPFP out when I first discovered metal. One year and another 12,000 miles later It still runs great. The vehicle just turned 47,500 miles this week.
The first (2)two pics are Dec2022 the Last (3)three are JAN2024. Most of the metal in the HPFP is sitting on the upper deck where the BLUE rubber seal seats. I also noticed the O-Ring has a small imperfection.
This is just for your information.
