Ran some numbers on my 2025 Willys out of curiosity. Wanted to know what my typical load was for weeklong camping trips. Likely the food/camping gear number is low. (With the wife along, we carry way too much junk!) This was a bit wild when I added it all up.

Did not include the wheels, tires, and diff skids as that is un-sprung weight. On the fence whether that counts or not. Though I do need to net out the spare. (Replaced the OEM Firestone MTs and wheels.)

I weighed every part coming off and going on when I did a full suspension job, and ended up +110 lbs on that alone. It’s eye-opening.

Not that it'll make a big difference to your calculations, but the weight of a full tank of gas is already included in the vehicle's curb weight.
Thanks! Did not realize that.

I'm pretty sure they factor in ~180lbs for the driver to if I remember right. Much easier to just weigh it than try to add things up.

Agreed on getting it weighed. This was just a random exercise to give me an ballpark idea. There's a public scale nearby. I just have not hit it when loaded and it is open.

And I am a bit above that standard driver number. :)

Good info. Gas only weighs 6 lbs per gallon so that helps a little bit. Unless you carry 20 extra gallons like I do LOL

I worry more about axle capacity than I do payload. I'd recommend going to the scales and put your steer axle on platform 1 and drive axle on platform 2 to see where you are. If you have a trailer, you can also put your trailer axle(s) on platform 3. Generally speaking, DOT (and other safety inspectors) are more concerned with axle ratings than payload capacities because that is the more common failure point.

We have a few Ram 1500 EcoDiesel guys who run commercially. DOT doesn't care that they are over their payload, but they do check axle capacities.

Here's my 2026 Rubicon with a full tank of fuel. No driver or passengers when weighed.
I do have AEV wheels, steel bumper and 35 Nitto mud terrain tires installed.
