The USB port on the dash works with no issues.
I'm just trying to see what the discrepancy between the dash port and the center console port is with all else being equal.

Not a huge issue, but I'd rather have that cable resting inside the center console.
Android auto and not mine. My dash connection constantly disconnects during certain driving sessions, other days excellent. I tried 2 different phones and the same so it's either the android auto app or this oem 7". It's a crapshoot.

Maybe it’s just me but I need to start the truck BEFORE plugging in the phone or I’ll have issues.
If I shut off the truck to pump gas, then start it with out unplugging my iPhone I’ll usually have problems like my steeringwheel controls don’t work ect..
This has been from day 1.

I have been having an issue with car play freezing on my 8.4 U-Connect after anywhere from 1-5 minutes of hooking it up. I’m using the Apple cord in the center console input inside the armrest. This worked fine for the first year plus I’ve owned it. Usually it links up right away when plugging the cord into my phone but when it goes out, it just freezes up whether you’re on a phone call or listening to music, podcast, Apple (or google) maps. It freezes up every time I try to use it through input 2 inside the console. Then after about 30-45 seconds frozen I get a screen “go to pairing to add or connect a phone “. If you unplug the phone and plug back in you can get it to work only to freeze again. Car play works fine through the dash input.
I have had it back to the dealer multiple times. First visit it was “can’t duplicate” as was the second, but second time it acted up before I even pulled out of the dealer. I got my service writer and brought them out to look. After more diagnostics they ordered and installed a new USB port for inside the console. That didn’t fix it. Most recently the Jeep was at the dealer for two full weeks with a “star” case open and Chrysler having the dealer “unplug this now try it. Unplug that now try it”. The dealer said they thought it was fixed so I picked it up last Friday. Drove the truck Saturday and it froze up.
Jeep is no help either. I called Customer Service last Monday and “opened a case” Phone rep stated I would hear from a supervisor within 48 hours. Crickets. I called them Friday, got voicemail and left a message. Called yesterday my rep is “not available “ so I asked for a supervisor, not available but they will contact me within 24 hours. Of course no call so I called back today. They are in meetings. I even tried “jeepcares” and 48 hours so far without a response. Modern car sound systems. It’s all great until it doesn’t work.

I took mine in last week for this same issue and a couple of other items just before my 3/36 was up. I will update you on what the dealer has to say when I pick it up tomorrow. Mine works fine on the dash, but I would rather not have that cable connected and prefer the one in the console.
An update on my dealer visit...tech said he tried another cable and could not duplicate. Of course they spent no more than 2 minutes on this and called it good. Spoke to the Service Manager after my visit as 3 of the 4 items were treated this way. He said it is often software, so I asked why they did not wee whether they software was updated. He told me to bring it back again...they are useless on this known issue.

Disappointed to hear.
The “small” stuff like this should work on these vehicles.
they are not cheap to buy.

The quality of the cable can have a significant impact on performance. The factory phone cables are not really intended for the type of use that comes with auto travel. I buy Anker cables that are designed for heavy use. I use a shorter three foot cable for connecting to the center console. The ports on the phones can wear and cause issues. They can also fill with dirt and lint which causes connection problems.
Thank you for this. I purchased the Anker cable and works perfectly now. Excellent advice for a small 15.00 investment. Solid cable.

I tried the adapter and the cable in the linked forum and still have issues. Did you purchase the cable and an adapter or just the Anker cable for the iPhone? I will try that next, what length cable is it as that seems to be an issue also.

I purchased the USB to android cable only. Plug into Jeep dash and works perfectly, even sounds better. The whole time it was the garbage white cable I had which I think was an iphone cable. Here is the link I used Amazon.com: Anker Powerline II USB-C to USB 3.1 Gen2 Cable (3ft), USB-IF Certified for Samsung Galaxy Note 8, S8, S8+, S9, S10, iPad Pro 2018, MacBook, Sony XZ, LG V20 G5 G6, HTC 10, Xiaomi 5 and More : Electronics

You are plugging into the dash, correct? My apple cable works perfectly on the dash, it is only when I try to use the USB in the console that I am having issues.

I would bet it's your cable.

Iphone cables actually wear out... I have had 3 O.E. apple cables wear out.
Look at the cable for this.

Yes in the dash but as my symptoms were exactly the same as yours, Its probably the same issue Well worth the 17 bucks, 100% better than the i phone cable even for charging. Check out the reviews, almost all had apple car play or andriod auto issues.

YEs, but I tried the new cable and adapter for the center console and it still doesn't work in the center console. It works perfectly in the dash, I just didn't want the cables hanging out of the dash if I could help it.

UPDATE my dealer had a star case and performed each of the steps to try and resolve the issue. None of the steps fixed it. The dealer first replaced the USB port in the console which did not work. They then replaced the media hub. Still not working. We have the problem with multiple phones both Apple and android. Jeep has refused to replace the radio as they say they’re not sure that would fix it. I opened a case with Jeep at my dealer’s suggestion and they have been less than helpful. The initial contact person is usually (not always) courteous and try to help. Case manager is NO help and rude. Zero updates from them since opening a case on 4/24. I have asked to be contacted by a supervisor as my case manager will not return calls (his voicemail has been full for a week now) on 5/1 and I’m still waiting. I just called Jeep again and was told they closed the star case as the dealer did not respond after five messages. Dealer says Chrysler does not respond. Dealer states they are out of ideas. So much for warranty and Jeep cares. Seems like it’s not so much to ask to get a call back within two weeks time. Who to trust , Jeep or dealer? Truck was in service 3/23 & 3/24, 4/10-4/14 and again 4/20-5/08. Dealer had me take it home awaiting word from Chrysler. Still waiting.

This is the most recent thread I've followed to try and resolve this problem in the Wrangler.

There are a number of similar threads on the jlwrangler forums. One goes heavily into the cause. The poster measured resistances and did a lot of investigation. I'll come back with a link when track it down.

In the link above I tried to replicate the steps taken. I haven't been able to do so. The cable referred to has a $30 US shipping fee. I refuse to buy it. Cost here would be about $60 CDN. I bought an anchor cable and used it. It didn't work with one of my phones; it's not a solution. I'm not going to throw parts at this issue.

I have tried 3 different cables (including the original Apple cable), on both front and center console USB ports, and tried 2 different phones. I STILL have the problem of intermittently disconnecting.
