Ah mine JT is low tech 7". Being an old Coonass I still ask folks for landmarks that is my guidance system (LOL)
Same here. Navigation is the reason I wish I had the 8.4" screen, well that and I want a trail cam

I usually update the "on-board" maps every 4 or 5 years, just as a back-up in case something were to happen to my phone. But I mainly use Waze. It's usually more accurate, and I love that I can see traffic jams before I hit them so I can re-route.

So I got this email today. Is this legit? We have to PAY to have our radio/map updated? What kind of crap is that?

My previous several vehicles have had stock NAV but the JT does not and I don't miss it. If I were traveling in areas where I couldn't use WAZE then that would be different. At least in my area I didn't find much value in car NAV updates. I found that sometimes I would pay for the update and it still didn't have new roads in our region. I have an old Garmin with lifetime free updates, and those updates were better. I don't know why the car companies can't do it as well as that since they're charging money.

Now I love how WAZE on my phone connects seamlessly with the Jeep's 7" screen, and it's SO much better than any stock NAV that I've ever had, including in my Infiniti which was the best of those previous ones. I stopped using the stock NAV when I finally understood how much better WAZE is in every way (as long as it can connect). Getting around all those traffic jams is priceless.

Older factory nav systems used CDs then DVDs to store the map files - which you could find images on torrent sites, download, and burn a disc yourself.
Ive seen newer systems using SD-Cards now - which I assume you could find updated map files for as well.

Not sure what media the new uConnect systems use (as my JTRD has not been shipped yet)….

EXCEPT - I've found in some areas it takes you through residential zones, school zones, and back roads that take longer. In Colorado Springs we decided to go shopping and we were on a highway in town and the JT NAV said to turn off the main road into a residential area, past a school, 3 stop signs, pavement dips, and then.......... it came out back on the highway it had us leave!
To get to a friend's house about 20 miles south of us it took us through some backroads and several miles of gravel into unmaintained roads. When we got there he asked - why in the heck did you come that way? The highway is right there, a quarter mile away (and he pointed and we could see the main road from his house!)
And finally - shopping in Colorado Springs, like most cities, where there's a 4 lane divided city street there are areas you can turn left to get into a shopping center on the other side. Sometimes they have turn lanes to the left with signals. NAV told us to go to the end of the block, make a u-turn and then turn into the shopping center, totally passing all of those left turn lanes!!
We were both scratching our heads - it kept taking us off main roads and many times in Colorado it would tell us to go to another intersection and make a u-turn. Can't even count the number of u-turns it wanted us to make.
This same type of crap happened to us in my old RAM. Loved that truck but the nav sucked more than any other vehicle I’ve ever had. We once went to a White Sox game. Close to the park it told us to get off 94 into a residential area. We thought, great, it’s going to take us in a back way. Instead, a few blocks later it had us get right back on 94! WTF?! ? So I got the 7.4 this time and use CarPlay now. Never had a dumbass issue like that again.

Funny how folks have become addicted to a piece of electronics telling them where to go. I always plan my route in advance using that thing called a map. Paper GPS. When I rode the Kawasaki across the country and back, I used the waffle house and rest stop "you are here" navigation app. (Writing directions on an envelope stored on the tank bag). Leaving tomorrow for Murrel's Inlet Already scoped the route and committed to memory. I also know where both of my friends live and how to get there. Turn just past the white house that burned down in 1970.

The cards used in Kia are encrypted and tied to a single VIN on the card. You had to get quite a bit of info from your infotainment screen before ordering your update. I would assume this is somehow similarly locked.

My phone has 256 GB of memory. Downloading Google Maps for the entire eastern half of the country consumes a minuscule portion of this. It’s cheap insurance to make sure you arenever stuck without mapping.

I also carry a rand McNally 50 state atlas in my car. Old tech but it doesn’t require batteries or satellite reception.

I would like an 8.4" Screen but not the whole system. I had all the bells and whistles in my Ram and sorry to say my experience with it was not good. Nothing ever worked or did what it was supposed to. Maybe its gotten better but I wasn't going to pay them to find out and then it not work again
