Honestly, take your pick. I had a couple of the injected 4.0 engines that I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire too. They leak oil like seives, make no power, and drink fuel. Sure, they had a strong torque curve down low, but peak was still <230 lb/ft. They're heavy too. I consider the 4.0 engines to be great boat anchors.

The 304 V8... sigh... well, those wouldn't get out of their own way but to be fair the 70s "oil crisis" and resulting changes to emissions pretty much neutered ALL V8 engines, so the 304 had good company.

I just can't imagine anybody wanting to go back to those days. A 2021 Jeep with 3.6L P-star will run 0-60 under 7 seconds, get excellent fuel economy, and has a torque curve as flat as a Kansas highway. Excellent for every condition or use. And if 270ish lb/ft isn't enough for a guy, there is always the crank-twisting EcoDiesel.

I thoroughly enjoy watching Dennis Collins restore the old CJ-5, 7, and 8s. Pure joy to watch. But I wouldn't trade my JT for a CJ even if there was $20k sitting on the hood of the CJ.
0-60 is not under 7 seconds.

I have never been under the hood of ANY 4.0L I-6 that didn't have oil at least seeping from between the block and head, if not also the valve cover and crank seal.

As far as the OP talking about weight... yes today's Jeeps are much heavier but that's because they're much safer. Have a crash in a CJ and you're pretty much a dead man.
You are welcome for a visit any time. (and not just to see the car, either - any time you are in the area, drop by)

I need to update the engine pics of my own 4.0. It MUST be leak-free for judging, otherwise the judges dock you big - a point for every leaking area. Yes, you can wipe things down but oil leaks almost always leave traces, stains, whatever.

Almost every vehicle today is heavier - look at the Mustang or Camaro! Huge weight gains. So to have a smaller engine pulling around a vehicle that's in some cases half a ton heavier than in the past - that's also amazing. Those old engines were pulling around lighter vehicles - add a thousand pounds and see how that works out.

Except that it is.

In fact, I ran 6.92 in mine and then low 7s on 35 inch mud tires!

And the Gladiator, being the PIG that it is, can still pull mid-7s without really trying.

Which makes me really want to do some 0-60 pulls in the diesel. It feels WAY stronger, but I need to put numbers on it....

RMS leak is common for the 4.0.
Odd since it's the same as the 258 (4.2) which is pretty much the same as the 232 and that's an area I've never had one leak at. I've had V8s leak there but none of my I6s have. Normally it's been the front or rear edge of the pan (258 especially) but the modified pan gasket helped that a bit.
It must be something the Jeep guys do to them as I've had the 4.0 and related engines since the early 70s and have never had a rear main leak.
I was a mechanic in an old AMC shop for a while - the rear main was something we never dealt with on the later 6s (once they stopped using the rope seals - I changed out plenty of those)
I see all the comments on oil leaks - and yet - not any of mine. Odd. Even at the shop it wasn't a big problem any more than any other engine we worked on.

The worst one was the "plastic" valve covers used on the early 80s 258. To make things worse, owners would crank down on the nuts to try to stop the leak, stress the cover, bulge it out at the sides and they had the Niagara falls of oil on the side of the engine.

That is surprising. Thanks for the video.

The diesel should shine in the 1/8 mile runs.

Not sure how they compile those numbers - these would be stock, and also the different gear ratios will count for something. The stock Overland tires would have an advantage over Rubicon tires.
Rubicon will be heavier, heavier tires, etc.
Ambient air temps, humidity, track conditions - you know the drill very well - all of those impact times.

In a week and a half I'll be at the all AMC races and near the river, the night air gets very humid and it's interesting to see the impact the changes have on the times.

MAYBE I should take my truck down the track! But not sure I want to spend the money for that......

I remember a friend with his Mercedes could make a difference in his times and final numbers just by opening the hood in the staging area and cooling things off. Weight matters, too - I sat with him on one run and it impacted his time slip.

Wonder what a V6 Sport Automatic and a Max tow would do.
I assume each faster than an Overland, Max tow faster than a regular Sport

Yep. Anyhoo, I remember when a 15 second car was considered fast. Some of those Wranglers are knocking on 14's. (Ignoring the 392)

Also I did test drive a Willys and the Rubi I ended up purchasing back to back, and the Rubi was much quicker.
