If you hybrid every car going forward, you could nearly double everyone's gas milage (on average) making the entire automotive segment only contribute 5%.
I've long argued that those who argue for reducing CO2 and emissions, they should be focusing on hybrids in the light and heavy duty truck segment. It's the biggest segment in the market, and where the most gains could be made.

The focus on mpg can be misleading, and can lead to an inappropriate focus on smaller, high mpg vehicles.

Gallons/100 miles can give a better picture of the relative fuel usage.

Take the '21 Sonata. It gets up to 38 mpg highway with ice only, while the hybrid gets up to 54 highway.

Going to the hybrid saves just over 0.75 gallons over 100 miles.

A non Rubi Gladiator with the pstar and auto is rated for 22 highway. If that could be brought up to 30 (half the improvement in the Sonata), it would save 1.2 gallons, or 0.4 gallons more.

Most people would look at 54 vs 30 and think the former is clearly better, even though the latter would save more fuel and emissions.
