This is not right, Jeep put an excellent German transmission in the gladiator capable of handling over 700ft/lbs of torque

BELOW QUOTED FROM TRANSMISSIONS ARE US

“The ZF 8 Speed has developed a reputation for being one of the best automatic transmission systems on the market today. Made by German supplier ZF, it has a long, decorated history of success within the automotive industry in both passenger and commercial vehicles. “

“What Makes the ZF 8 Speed Transmission Excellent?
The ZF 8 Speed transmission has an overwhelmingly positive reputation within the automobile industry. Its highly flexible design means that the ZF transmission can be used within a huge number of car models, ranging from expensive sports cars to luxury sedans.

The ZF 8 Speed transmission can accommodate a maximum torque output from as low as 300 newton-metres up to 1000 newton-metres. The torque converter can even be swapped out for an electric motor – creating a hybrid option that will still carry significant power.

It is compatible with virtually all rear-wheel-drive vehicles and can work with the majority of all- or four-wheel-drive systems. The ZF 8 Speed transmission can easily be integrated into nearly all vehicles – no matter whether it’s an old or new model.

Hydraulic functions within the gearbox even allow the ZF to be suitable for start/stop engine configurations, allowing vehicles to greatly increase their fuel efficiency. The clever technical design of the ZF gearbox also allows for multi-gear shifts. The ZF 8 Speed transmission can shift, for example, from third to sixth gear seamlessly, giving a vehicle with instant, increased power.

This is why experts live by the ZF and state that it is as good as, if not better than, dual clutch transmission models. “

“Which Manufacturers Use the ZF 8 Speed Transmission?
If you’ve bought a high-end vehicle in the past several years, the odds are good that it contains a ZF gearbox.

The ZF has been particularly popular in many automatic luxury sedans and sports cars. Manufacturers from Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Alfa Romeo, Dodge, Ford and BMW all rely on ZF transmissions to function.

You would never think there was anything in common with a Ford F-150 and Rolls Royce – but they both often contain a ZF gearbox.”

Even the Toyota 5th gen 2020 Supra uses this transmission.

This transmission in different configurations can handle over 700 ft/lbs.

This auto is in a Lamborghini as well!

No Jeep did not skimp on the 8 speed automatic.
Awesome! I gleefully stand corrected, no pride here my friend. I have a very cynical viewpoint and understand manufacturers' motive from that profit perspective. If it is the best, then I harbor understandable regret in getting a manual. The OP's must have truly been a fluke with this information.

My understanding is that FCA builds the 8-speed automatic under license from ZF, renamed “TorqueFlite” (*) and incorporates its own set of tweaks and improvements. Chrysler uses it on everything from Scat Packs and Hellcats, to Jeeps and Power Wagons.

_______________________
* The original Chrysler TorqueFlite transmission was considered one of the best automatics in the world between the 1950s and 1980s. It was bullet-proof, fast and smooth. It was the first automatic to shift faster than a person could shift a manual transmission, and was built to withstand the torquey Chrysler HEMIs. The original TorqueFlite was so strong and refined that it was used by high-end automakers like Aston Martin, Maserati and Jensen.

Covid has been a total &$@$! I have a 2017 rebel that’s now in its 3rd rear end. Last time it went, I had to wait 3 months while all parts were back ordered indefinitely. Have always wanted a wrangler so I took the plunge on a 2021 gladiator rubicon only to find out after I signed the bill of sale that I’d be looking to wait between 3-6 months for delivery....
Three to six months? Find another dealer. Every dealer I talked to said 45 to 70 days. I ordered mine in Feb and delivery in 67 days. They are just trying to sell you one on the lot.

The specs on the JT on the 8 speed says the origin is Germany just like the diesel says Italy

That’s just it... they only had one gladiator rubicon on the lot which they wouldn’t sell because they needed a demo vehicle for the customers to test drive. Then everyone has to order. They had no reg wranglers in stock and according to them, there are no more wrangler allocations in Canada this year. Guess I should have included that I’m in Canada :p there are people here that ordered back in November and still don’t have their vehicles! I attempted to contact a different dealer who apparently had 6 of em only to find out they’re all sold and the only one they had available was a used one ( which I’m not looking for ) and it was 8% interest as opposed to the 2.99 % for a new one. Mine retailed for $72k but ended up getting it for 61 + tax so I figured I should stick it out. Don’t hear of many discounts on jeeps

Window stickers on Jeep Gladiators with the automatics say "United States" for country of origin for the transmission. Like the other guy said, it is a licensed built ZF.

Quoted from wikipedia:

Chrysler Group LLC initially received the 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions from the ZF plant in Saarbrücken, Germany. By 2013, in parallel with Chrysler Group, ZF had set up a new transmission production plant in Gray Court, South Carolina.[7] ZF Friedrichshafen and Chrysler Group have reached a supply and license agreement for the 8HP. Chrysler Group is licensed to produce the 8HP at the company’s Kokomo Transmission Plantand the Kokomo Casting plant, production began in 2013. This transmission is marketed by Chrysler under their own brand name, the Torqueflite 8.[8][9]

2nd generation 8HP products were released starting in 2014. Efficiency improvements over the original design include a wider ratio spread of 7.8:1, reduced drag torque from the shift elements, reduction in required oil pump pressure, and broadened use of the coasting and start-stop systems.[10] ZF estimated fuel economy improvement over 1st generation 8HP kits to be 3%. Refinements were also made with respect to vibration.

Are you certain they zero'd out the adaptive learning from the old transmission?

One thing I wanted to mention is that despite the waiting Jeep Care/Customer Care did good by me. They delt with dealer and far as I can tell given current circumstances got part as soon as they could. They also are going to reimburse a car payment. But that said, I am going to really watch it for a few weeks before I declare success. I am still somewhat nervous all things considered.

I suppose if the Dealer and Customer care experience was better I would be less upset....but right now they are killing any desire to continue supporting Jeep. Just complete lack of urgency or anything. I just have to believe that if they made the effort they could have a transmission at dealer within a week....when I know they are pumping out new JTs every day. They know, we have very little recourse but to wait. If I end up having to wait 7+ weeks like others...that is 2mo of payments for a dead vehicle. Unacceptable. I just got off phone with a lawyer, they are looking into what my options are.
I agree, they had my Rebel for almost 3 months hooking it up to a computer that synced with a computer at Ram HQ in I believe Michigan, turned out it was missing a Ground strap and some other stuff which is why it had all the electric problems.
but they didn’t offer me a Loaner vehicle either. Brand new $60,000 truck that ran like shit. And Ram couldn’t have cared less.
but that being said, I’ve had 4 Rams and several Jeep TJs and never Had any issues accept with that one Rebel.
good luck with it!

Yep, but it happens, not sure how bad it's going to hurt their name though. The transmissions have had issues for almost 20yrs now and they still sell the crap out of them so people still buy them. Mine crapped the bed at 52,000 miles in my JKU, and that replacements torque converter fried 10,000 miles later and ruined the second transmission. It didn't stop me from buying another jeep. Just sayin
sorry late to the game. The transmission in the Gladiator has only been made by Chrysler since 2012, ZF made it for a few years prior to put in BMWs and a Few other rear wheel drive cars in europe and US. Your other jeep had a Diamler designed 5 speed which is no longer made and it did have some problems. The 8 speed availability problem is computer chip related as well as massive demand for new vehicles that contain them, there are a certain number made each week specifically for warranty but with chip availability a problem it is a ballancing act to keep transmissions for service and production (keeping people working).
