i found an excuse to drive to the store today in the snow. For fun, I pulled the parking brake and turned the wheel to get her to fishtail a bit. Going maybe 10 mph. Wide open area no other cars pedestrians etc. 2wd high. She fishtailed a little. The “d” started flashing and told me to shift to park. The. I had to step on the brake and restart the engine, which had shut off. The first time it happened I thought it was an auto start stop event so I shut that off along with electronic stability control. Tried again. Same result. Is my Jeep trying to protect me from myself or is something broken? Seems like this could cause issues off road.

I could see the ESC freaking out and pulling throttle input, but for the engine to completely shut doesn't sound normal unless maybe you're really low on fuel and that's causing the pump to starve as fuel sloshes side to side in the tank.

Putting ESC in the off position does a 80-90% stop of the operation. It does not; however, stop the Yawl Sensor from operation.. this is "Like" a gyroscope and when you get sideways with centrifugal
force;
It will duplicate engine power shutdown like the ESC is operating. Strange the engine shut down.

I have driven mine (23 Mojave) in the snow and had no problem spinning, drifting, donuts, etc....Just turned off the ESC, cranked the steering wheel and punched it. Didn't try grabbing the e brake though. Wonder if that has something to do with it?

It had at least a half a tank of gas so I doubt that was a factor.

It's "protecting" you, because there are too many idiots.

You can't rev the engine in N very high, you can't back up with the door open, etc.

Super thankful I don't have an automatic, all those nannies are a nightmare. The fact the engine "shutdown" or potentially stalled is not normal. I could see it doing it's ESC/TC thing and cutting all throttle response and applying the brakes, but the engine doesn't shutdown or stall even with my manual 2021 Willys. I can also rev to redline anytime I want, which some people say they can't with their manual.

Go pull the PENDING codes from all modules. You may not have the CEL lit up, but I guarantee there's at least one pending code if not also some triggers that flagged during that event. And no, a Tazer will not pull pending codes (mine wont) and definitely not monitors/triggers (PID events).

Only way to know for certain is to turn traction control off and try again. I've never played with the parking brake as it's a rear wheel drive and power drifts are more fun anyway. I'm guessing it's a combination of the traction control and the parking brake. I've never got mine to shut off but have had the traction control pull power dozens of times of I forgot to turn it off.

That’s the biggest gripe I have about new vehicles, to dam many Nannie’s built into the stability system. To the point you can’t make handbrake turns! In the past I’ve used handbrakes to help send power across an open differential, even an especially on fork lifts, that’s worked every time.

Mine does 11s and donuts regularly without issues. That doesn’t sound normal at all. Mine only does that if I don’t have my seat belt on and try to move it with the door open.

That sounds like the auto park feature. You can look in the manual on how it works and how to disable it. It’s a safety feature for regular driving folks.

I have used the handbrake with and without traction control off. No issue with engine shutting down. I think that's a dangerous feature to shut engine down. Mine is an early 2021.
