I’m considering getting a set of JLR takeoffs on Craigslist with brand new BFG KO2s for my JTR.

Main reason is it’s a good price ($1100-1200) for 5 wheels with tires and TPMS. Allows me to do a 5-wheel rotation.

Most JT takeoffs are asking the same or even more but with a steel spare.

I have read threads talk about the increased strength of the JT wheels vs JL wheels, mainly to help with towing, but is this really an issue? Am I asking for trouble mounting the JL wheels on the truck?

Won’t tow any more than 1000-2000lbs, although I do plan on maxing our the payload with overlanding gear (canopy, RTT, etc.).

Thoughts? My gut is telling I’m overthinking it and it will be just fine, but I wanted to get some feedback here first.

Wow, we are polling all over the place.

The fact that we some saying “don’t do it, not safe, asking for trouble” and another saying “will be fine no matter what, tow up to 7000 lbs” tells me there is no obvious consensus.

Any more input?

I'd be shocked if a JL wheel ever failed on a JT on the roadway. I'd say Jeep just beefed up the load rating on factory JT wheels to meet SAE standards since they officially tow tested it.

Having said that, the liability is something nobody can help you make a decision on.

Are all gladiator wheels rated the same for towing? Will black takeoffs tow the same as max tow?

I imagine at least the Sport and Rubi wheels would be rated the same since they can tow up to 7000-7600 lbs. Overland wheels are probably rated the same as well just for simplicity, but who knows.

Totally fair. Thanks for the input.

I can also tell you for a fact because I've measured them myself that the JL wheels and JT wheels are the exact same weight. So unless they used some really special metallurgy on the JT wheels, the load rating is probably not drastically higher. It would be nice if the backs of these wheels were stamped clearly with a load rating like aftermarket wheels are.

The only time i've ever seen a wheel fail, is when someone slammed into a pot hole on the highway during a new england winter. The hole was about 2' in diameter and roughly 8" deep. The state ended up paying for the replacement rim. But yea, it cracked in three separate locations all the way through! Amazing. That being said, what about the load range for the KO2's....aren't they C as opposed to the E range meant for the higher load capacity? Kept my vote out, don't have enough time to research the facts. I'd ask a dedicated tire/wheel shop that has company standards to follow. If they refuse to do something specific for a customer based on policy and "liability concerns", I'd consider that as a possibility for having issues. On another note, would you really have the max payload of a JL rim or a C range tire? I was about to go for this same swap, and the only reason I decided not to, was because I decided to spend the extra few hundred for 35's. Good luck, if you find good concrete data feel free to post up, I know there have been quite a few of us wondering about this.
