I recently brought my 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon into my local 4x4 shop to service my JTR Auto 8 Speed Trans and was quoted $1400. I said thanks but no thanks, I will do it myself. There are plenty of good resources out there, but I want to confirm a few things on this forum. One thing the shop said was that I would need a whole new pan with filter, but I also read that there are both plastic and steel - the plastic has the built in filter but the steel you can replace just the filter. I put a magnet on it and it did get stuck, so I'm assuming that it is a steel pan and that I can just replace the filter. Is this BS, or do I need to buy the whole pan and filter? I have the link below to the mopar part. Any suggestions or thoughts would be super helpful.

99.9% of the JT's left the factory with the steel pan and separate but replaceable filter. A few unicorns exist having the plastic pan.

You have a steel pan, which has a replaceable filter. (Theres also two magnets that are inside the pan that need to be cleaned.) Other Chrysler products like the Charger and what not have a plastic pan which has a built in filter that cannot be changed by itself. The whole pan needs to be replaced.

Filter and fluid can reuse gasket a time or 2 but it would always help to have one on hand incase you noticed a gouge or Knick in it. Then you can throw it on and you golden .

Good then maybe things changed, i did my trans oil change mid 2022.
I did one also around the same time. There is a few times they go out of stock back order in a lot of places, but usually you can find somebody with one.

Push came to shove, I would also have no issue using a aftermarket one like from Crown Automotive. Most of the aftermarket ones though use PA66-G33 plastic versus the OEM FILTRAN that uses PA66-G35. That extra 2% glass fill in the plastic with the OEM though makes it a bit more rigid. OEM or aftermarket, the filter media is a rock catcher anyways.
