Thanks for pricing it all out. As I said, doing that bulb replacement would be affordable whereas buying the LED headlight solutions are $300-500 (or more) just for headlight. This bulb solution is definitely a big win on pricing.
My Sport S came with LED tails through the safety package, but of course no fronts. I picked up the Supernova V.4 replacement bulbs for around $150 on the 4th of July sale, and I've been quite pleased with them so far. My only real concern is: now I want the LED fogs and DRL/turn makers to go with them :) Kidding aside, the V.4 bulbs are great, and were like a 60 minute swap. Would have been a lot quicker, but I tried for half an hour to make the bulb change through the engine compartment, before deciding my ham-hands just weren't made for the task. I finally popped the grill off and took out the light housings, and I was done like 15 minutes later.

The silver star is a good bulb but is the child of heavy duty marketing. I sold them for years and can rattle off all the talking points for them and the cool blue series and the xtra vision. I’d save some dollars and take a look at the Vosla line, a spin off of Phillips and sister the Narva. Quality on par with Hella at a lower price point for comparable performance and a heap cheaper than the silver star.

I’ve had the TruckLites on my JK so I’m hoping the LEDs will be just as bright as the JT ones since those were amazing! The LEDs that I have in my GC are garbage and no where near as bright. so here’s hoping. Just gotta wait for my Punk’n.

Probably worth mentioning here what a lux is.

A lux is a metric unit of illumination which is equal to the number of lumens per square meter and is distance dependent as the light is being distributed in a wedge both horizontally and vertically. So saying it produced X lux is somewhat meaningless if we do not know the distance at which the meter is placed. Isolux charts like we may seen from hella do a great job of explaining the visual intensity and shape of a given beam.

1 lux is typically described as the moonshine cast by a full moon with black skies and no ambient light pollution or cloud. This is a surprising amount of light such that the other descriptor is enough light to read the New York Times at a reasonable and comfortable distance.

Illumination is the measured intensity in of light falling on a surface where as Luminance is the perceived visual intensity of the light source itself.

So “brightness” is a somewhat misleading term and concept used by marketeers to sell products. It’s like asking which type of music is louder.

Now as to are LED worth it? That’s up to you. I personally don’t like LED for normal driving as the single frequency light can cause interesting shadows and play games with color that can trick the eye. Since most LED are biased towards the blue end of the spectrum this does great things for not triggering our irises as you would in a normal light response which is what the really blue LED and HID feel so much more glaring. For auxiliary lighting I have no issues with LED because of the massive output and far looser constraints on beam shape. We could get into a long discussion about light color and perceived differences and advantages but we can save that for another time.

Just remember, if it sounds like something a sales guy would say it probably is. Do your homework and learn the details.
Let's get into a long discussion about light color and perceived etcc!!! This is great stuff and important...

For those of us in snowy climates (Iowa here), is it possible to use some kind of cover/lens over the headlight pocket so that snow can not collect in the recess? This isn't an issue in most vehicles because the headlights aren't recessed. Surely a product could be developed to just cap off the headlight pocket.

So we don't get a whole lot of snow here and when we do it doesn't last long. I've seen quite a few people act like this is a big problem. Can't you just clean it out before you leave and won't the wind keep it cleaned out while driving?
And don't call me Shirley

Common sense would be to remove any snow from the vehicle that may come off on the highway or block your vision but some people need their hand held or some warning stickers.. For a long time I've always considered new Wrangler purchasers to be of the yuppie variety that may not consider such tedious manual labor..

If it's a good snow your headlights will get covered as you drive, and no the wind won't keep it cleaned if it starts icing up.

I heard you use less blinker fluid with LEDs but blinker fluid only costs 5 bucks and depending on how many turns you make you might come out better without LEDs :like:

Alright if you insist. But it’s gotta be later after I get the kids to bed and tuck into a beer. Is it alright if I start it as a new thread or should we continue to stomp a mud hole into this one?

New thread please. As Gary Larson put it, "my brain is full'!

Just joshin' really. Actually, I'm surprised and perhaps enlightened (ha) that so many on this thread are happy with $1000 for LEDs throughout. I may rethink it . . . no wait, I can't because I want a Sport S.

If it ain't thread jacking, it ain't the forum .we proceed!. so my questions are these...

What are the factors in selecting the light type? I am older and blinder and I want a day light patch in front of me without pissing off anyone. Options?

Still waiting for mine to arrive but I am going to go with the JW Speaker 8700 with the brackets I think. I have seen quite a few people here and on reddit post about the bulb only replacement as well. Either one will be a huge improvement from my 2011 Cruze.... ha

Is this some form of subliminal-ism ?
Nothing subliminal about it. Pure BS from start to finish. My 2c
