UPDATE -
Yawnie has been on his meds for going on 3 weeks now. He's no longer loosing weight and my wife and I have both caught him actually trying to eat some of the dry food from the feeder - but I'm afraid I've spoiled him a bit. He sees me getting up or hears the refrigerator door and he's right there winding around my legs begging for expensive wet food.
His behavior has changed back a bit to what it used to be - a bit less hyper, lays around more (like a typical cat) and actually once again will sit on my lap for a while. At his worst, he was restless, wandering, couldn't get comfortable, hyper at times.
My wife ordered some stuff that came in a flat box only about 3" high or so and she tossed it on the floor, she was going to pick it up later that evening and recycle it. That was over a week ago. It's still there because Yawnie has adopted it as one of his beds and will spend a couple hours in it in the evenings. A very different cat.
He's no longer pulling out chunks of fur from his back near his tail.
He's got a long ways to go, and there's no fixing being old, but at least his aging should be more natural and not so uncomfortable.
It will be interesting to see how his check-up goes next week as far as his weight and blood tests. It supposedly takes 2 weeks to "several weeks" for this drug to work (depending on the web site you read) but I think it's actually helping at this point. We've stopped the weight loss - hopefully reversed it, stopped the hair pulling, and he's settled down more, taking real cat naps that last longer.
At his peak he was 14 pounds. The vet visit this time around he was 6.7 pounds.
Blood work done this week. Yawnie is at 7.2 pounds (from 6.7) No loss looks like weight is stabilized if not put on a bit.
We over-shot the runway, though. Now is thyroid numbers are on the bottom side of normal. Time to stop "correcting" them and back off a bit. Have you ever tried cutting a hard shelled pill the size of a B-B? Doesn't work so well. They blow up or you get a tiny piece off the shell.
His red cell count was down to anemia range so backing off the meds, cutting the dose, should help that as this med can cause that problem. He's been lazy lately but I wasn't sure if that was the dropping of the thyroid numbers, calming things down, or he was simply being a normal cat.

In any case, meds working, maybe too well, so adjusting the dose, another check in a month (he's getting rather expensive! but not nearly as much as that crazy Tuvak cat (spelled with an a to avoid a law suit from Paramount))

Ignore Tuvak at your own peril -

You got it.

Anyone listening outside our window would think we had little kids "will you two stop fighting! No running in the house! Stop jumping on the bed! Feet off the table"

Well, great subject just a tear jerker for me Last Tuesday I had to put my best friend HARLIE down after 13 years .Yesterday I took another step into the unknown and put a deposit down on my next girl Max short for Maxine. Maybe iam strange but I go out each evening to the grave site and tell HARLIE how much happiness she had brought to me and the memories .,Now just counting days waiting to pick up MAX ,she is only two weeks old so another 4 wks. Dogs are truly mans best friend

You are NOT strange. I still talk to my lifetime best friend, Sooner the blonde Labrador and he's been gone almost 6 years now. I love my dogs. They only want our attention and affection and would literally give their lives for us. "Animals (dogs) are better than humans and it ain't even close!"

Rest is Paradise Harlie and to little Maxine, you are a very very fortunate pooch. You're going to be loved to distraction all your life - as ALL dogs should be,
