But, it did save you gas, which reduced emissions, and that is what the EPA cares about. Jeep has to implement it with a default to on setting to get EPA credit for using it, which they need to be able to continue producing inefficient vehicles. The two battery setup has been in use for many years. It is done to keep the computers stable during ESS events. Do you really want to sit at an intersection and wait for all the computers to reboot due to low voltage when the ESS system tries to restart the engine with a marginal battery?
I would rather have my vehicle just stay running and not shut off. I know the reason behind the whole thing. What really upsetting is that my state charges a high way usage fee now for fuel efficiency cars. Guess I get screwed either way..

Late to the thread, but I sure hope they replaced BOTH batteries.
If the aux battery was failing, it will continue to draw down a new main battery and you'll be back to square one soon enough.

I use the button on the dash to keep the ESS off so the engine runs all the time, because I want the cabin to stay comfortable. If your state is charging you an efficiency fee for a Jeep, then it is just a money grab. Those fees are supposed to be for vehicles that don't pay road taxes collected through gasoline sales.

I definitely agree with you about the money grab. The bad thing is they don't even fix the roads correctly here with the supposed fees so I'm sure someone here is pocketing it or it's being misused.

You make a good point. When the dealership investigates a battery failure under warranty, they hook up BOTH batteries for a few hours and test them both. The test is actually sent to corporate and must show that the battery tested bad before they can replace it. My primary was bad, but the auxiliary is still good. We had quite a discussion about this whole process.

Oh, and as to the Auto-shut off feature...... I hate it like God hates sin...... I always press the button to defeat it.

Then a aux battery deletion may be in your future. It's certainly in mine, as the first sign of trouble. Maybe even before.
I'm still not sure If I'll do the full delete or just the easy one - F42 fuse and aux ground.

Well, today I went to get my jeep and the svc mgr told me that on second testing the aux battery tested bad too so they replaced it too. I'm glad the indicator lit up when it did or it could have drained the new primary in short time.

That's good to hear. I was pretty sure the aux was cannibalizing the main from the beginning, and it would have done the same again with the new one.
